Life & Work with Taylor Rasmussen of Highland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Rasmussen

Hi Taylor, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Taylor Rasmussen and I have been in the dental field for nearly 12 years now. I started assisting school as a senior in high school and absolutely loved it. I loved the hands-on work, the variety assisting offered me, no weekend or night shifts, and I was making good money right out of high school. I started in General Dentistry, which is a little bit of everything, and also have experience in other specialties like Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Pediatric Dentistry. This career allowed me to be the bread winner while my husband went to college and finished his degree. Dentistry is something I have always been passionate about. There’s so much to know and learn that I was never bored, and I was always intrigued with each case. Now after having two babies I am fortunate enough to be able to help other dental assistant’s enter into the dental field. I am the director and instructor at Elevated Dental Assisting where we certify our student’s to become dental assistant’s accredited by the state of Utah. It’s a 10 week course that certifies student’s in assisting, front office management, dental radiology, and CPR/ First- Aid. We pride ourselves on being a high-quality course that not only helps you advance in your professional life, but your personal life as well. I love teaching and my students! I truly hope to touch their lives in more ways than one. The journey into the Dental Field is a fun one and I hope to inspire them to be their best and know I am rooting for them every step of the way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For me, I feel like my work has been as smooth as some of them come thankfully. There are times when you may run into adversary, but I always feel like communication is key whether it’s something to do with a coworker, or something with your job that you’re having issues with. I have found myself to have amazing employers past and present where I felt comfortable having open conversations with them if I had any issues that they could help resolve. I will say, that no matter what career you are in, I always feel that it’s necessary to have these conversations in a calm professional manner and hold yourself to a high standard.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a dental assistant instructor at Elevated Dental Assisting, my role involves educating and training the next generation of dental assistants. I teach a comprehensive curriculum that covers both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for success in the dental field. This includes topics such as dental anatomy, radiography, infection control, chairside assisting, and patient care.

I specialize in hands-on training, ensuring that students gain real-world experience and confidence in their abilities. My approach emphasizes the importance of precision, professionalism, and empathy in patient interactions. I am known for my engaging teaching style and my dedication to student success, often going above and beyond to provide individualized support and mentorship.

What sets me apart from others is my extensive experience as a practicing dental assistant, which allows me to provide students with valuable insights and practical tips that they can’t find in textbooks. I continuously update the curriculum to reflect the latest advancements in dental technology and best practices, ensuring that our program remains cutting-edge. Each week we also focus on core values to help us better our personal and professional life. I personally feel that incorporating these core values can help our student’s tremendously to better themselves and their own circumstances.

I am most proud of the success stories of my students. Seeing them graduate and excel in their careers is incredibly rewarding. Their achievements reflect the quality of education and training they received at Elevated Dental Assisting. My commitment to fostering a supportive and dynamic learning environment is what truly sets me apart and drives my passion for teaching.

What makes you happy?
Connection. I personally feel like this one word hold so much power. Connection with family, friends, coworkers, and others makes me happy because it provides a sense of belonging and support. These relationships offer emotional sustenance, joy, and a sense of purpose. Spending time with loved ones allows for sharing life’s ups and downs, creating lasting memories, and building a support system that is there during both good times and challenging moments.

With family, I cherish the deep bonds and unconditional love that come from shared experiences and history. Friends bring laughter, understanding, and a different perspective, enriching my life in countless ways. My coworkers contribute to a fulfilling professional life, offering camaraderie and collaboration that make work enjoyable and rewarding.

These connections also promote personal growth and learning. Each interaction is an opportunity to learn something new, whether it’s a skill, a piece of advice, or a different way of looking at things. The diversity of experiences and insights from my social circle helps me grow as a person and a professional.

Ultimately, these relationships remind me of what truly matters in life. They provide a sense of fulfillment and happiness that comes from knowing I am part of a community that cares for and supports one another.
