Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Roux
Hi Olivia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My entire life I have been trying to heal my body. Mostly my skin. I was born with eczema and I have battled with managing it since I was a little girl. While most kids were trying to settle down their acne, I was dealing with acne AND eczema breakouts all over my body, my face, and on my scalp. Many doctors gave me steroid creams and oral medications that would clear things up for a short time but never make it go away completely. As an adult, I learned to somewhat manage it depending on my stress levels and what foods I ate, but it has always been something I’ve struggled with. In 2020, during the pandemic, I had time to reflect on where I was in life as a 30-year-old working professional. Through my 20s I worked in hospitality and restaurants, I was a wedding planner for a short time, I even worked in a flower store and a gym at one point. I’ve always been somebody that loves to learn with my hands and be around other people sharing what I love and helping them in some sort of way. I digress though. During the shutdown, I realized it was time for a change with everything I was passionate about, and also my own personal struggles. I decided to look into aesthetics and holistic ways to help heal my skin, build up my confidence, and if I could do that, why wouldn’t I help other people do the same. I took some time researching the aesthetics industry and was surprised by all the different routes and modalities I could work with once being a licensed practitioner. At the time I was living in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, A friend of mine who had studied down in Utah mentioned that Salt Lake has some of the best aesthetics schools in the country so I enrolled at NIMA which is in South Jordan, just 20-30 minutes south of Salt Lake City. Almost a year later, I had packed up my life and I moved to this beautiful town. As soon as I started my education and training to get my master aesthetician license, I knew this industry is exactly where I’m supposed to be, and I knew helping others in this way was my purpose. I graduated in 2022 and started working right away at a wellness center. In December 2023 I decided I wanted to work for myself and start my own business. I was very nervous because I have never started a company before and along the excitement of this new endeavor there is always anxiety when it comes to wondering if you’ll be successful or not. With support from family and friends I put my head down and Nouveau [new-voh] Skin was born.
Nouveau, in French, means new, something changing or becoming altered. When someone comes in for service, I want them to leave feeling refreshed, feeling brand new, feeling like they received a treatment that’s actually going to make a difference in their skin concerns and their skin goals that they have. I chose this name because I am actually half American half Swiss French and I grew up in Europe and traveling the world, so I wanted to bring my international background into this business. I’ve always had goals to bring on some international brands which I’ve brought in one so far and I will bring in a few more as time goes on.
Being from Switzerland, the country’s flower is the Edelweiss. You will see this Edelweiss in my logo. The edelweiss is known to grow in higher altitudes such as the mountains and the flower itself has to be quite resilient to survive the change in weather and to push through dry rock on the cliff side which takes a lot of work. I’ve also been through a lot of things in my life so I felt that this flower really brought together my background and also what I’ve been through in a really beautiful way. I also think it’s important to remember that nobody’s life is perfect and we’re all working really hard every single day to survive, to support ourselves and our families and to enjoy this wonderful world that we live in.
As of today, Nouveau Skin Has been officially open for 3 1/2 months. I am so excited to see where I can take this business and how I can give back to my community. Every person I’ve met from this business has impacted my life in some way which I think is really cool. That’s why I love working with people because everyone has a different story. Everyone has a different background and everyone has a different idea of what they want their lives to look like. When somebody has chosen to receive a treatment from me I get to be honored by learning all of these things while also sharing my story with them. I’m truly grateful and honored by all the beautiful souls who pick me and my business to come to to receive relaxation, serenity and a safe place while being treated. Even if I’m only in their lives for one hour, I want to have them leave feeling at peace and confident. It’s a small impact on someone’s life but sometimes it’s the little things that matter the most.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a perfectly smooth way to get where I am today, however I know that every bump I’ve had has made me stronger, given me the confidence, motivation and discipline to put myself out there and create something that’s completely my own and honestly, out of my comfort zone.
I definitely did not realize how much paperwork I would need to fill out to open Nouveau! I’m not a fan of the administration type of work, but I can now say I feel confident and starting any business knowing what I need to do and what I don’t need to do.
I’m grateful to have a super supportive family that encouraged me the entire way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Nouveau, we specialize in custom facials, chemical peels, and micro- and nano-needling. Here I prioritize holistic methods in terms of working with gut health, gua sha, and holistic/organic brands. I wanted to bring the medical side of esthetics together with the holistic and I believe I’ve been able to form that synergy. I am very intentional with what modalities I bring on as well as product lines. I don’t want to have what every other esthetician has, right? This is why I primarily will always work with international skincare companies. I currently work with Utah’s Glymed+ and Oliveda which is an organic/holistic German company that has been around for about 20 years.
Nouveau is different because I truly value my relationships with my clients. I never want anyone to feel like they’re just a number. I want my clients to feel safe, welcomed, and know there is zero judgment for anything. I’m honestly most proud of starting the brand! Believing in myself and what I have to offer because it’s easy to never take action on your dreams and goals.
The business may not be as busy as I’d like it to be yet but I’m proud of how it’s done so far and that I even have clients!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Authenticity and honesty. I am never going to lie or spruce something up just to make a sale or get someone back through my doors. If there is a treatment I believe another practitioner can do better then me somewhere else, I will send my client to them. I know that this means my business may grow slower then others but I want to stay as true to myself and my values as I can.
