Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Hoschouer.
Hi Nicole, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi, I’m Nicole – a freelance graphic designer, proud mom, and introvert extraordinaire. My journey to graphic design wasn’t straightforward, but it’s a story of passion and persistence.
I’ve always had a creative spark and a deep love for art. I studied art history in college, but my career path took many twists and turns. From working in museums and galleries to recruiting and being an executive assistant, I’ve done it all. While I enjoyed these roles, none felt like my true calling. Occasionally, I got the chance to design signage or marketing materials and realized how much I loved it. Every project made me think, “I wish I’d studied graphic design,” but I felt like it was too late for me to start over.
After a while, I decided to quit working and stay at home with my two daughters. I cherished my time with them but soon felt the urge to pursue something for myself. I wanted a flexible, fulfilling career that I was passionate about. My dream of being a graphic designer was still in the back of my mind. Then one day I discovered Mariah Althoff’s “Ditch the Degree Design School” on Instagram. I felt like maybe my dream of becoming a graphic designer was actually possible. Inspired, I enrolled, built a portfolio, and started freelancing within months.
Now, I specialize in brand and web design, creating everything from logos and websites to packaging and social media templates. I’m constantly learning and growing, and I’m proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and finally pursuing my dream career.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting my business hasn’t always been easy, especially as an introvert. Being a designer is great for someone like me – I can work independently and immerse myself in my creativity. However, certain aspects like marketing and sharing my work don’t come naturally. Every time I put myself out there, I feel self-conscious and awkward. But I constantly remind myself that everyone begins somewhere, and in five years, I’ll be grateful I started today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have a deep passion for design (obviously) and a special connection with fellow introverts, which is why I specialize in logo, brand, and web design for introverted business owners. I love using my creativity to help entrepreneurs show off their amazing businesses and feel more confident in their visual identities. There’s something magical about collaborating with those who appreciate thoughtful, intentional design and embrace their quiet nature. I believe being introverted is a superpower, not a limitation. I also believe when introverts unite (separately, from the comfort of their own homes of course), incredible things happen.
One recent project I’m particularly proud of is the branding and website design for Full Circle Counseling, a child and family therapy practice in Colorado (www.fullcirclecounseling.net). The client wanted her brand to convey warmth, growth, acceptance, and compassion, with a touch of playfulness. She also wanted to incorporate a circle to reflect the business name.
I developed a concept featuring a circle with rough edges, split in half and flipped to resemble a butterfly. The rough edges signify the beauty in differences and imperfection, while the butterfly represents growth and playfulness. We hadn’t discussed butterflies before, but when I presented the idea, the client loved it. She revealed that she had just bought a butterfly print for her office, making our collaboration feel truly magical. It was incredibly rewarding seeing our visions come together and watching her brand come to life.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Mariah Althoff was an incredible mentor and cheerleader for me. Her course, Ditch the Degree Design School, provided the essential foundation I needed to get started. More importantly, she offered personal advice and feedback that gave me the confidence to put myself out there and learn as I go. My husband Dave has been unwavering in his support every step of the way. I’ve also been overwhelmed with encouragement from friends and family. They’ve cheered me on, reached out with design opportunities, proofread my website, let me practice on them, and more. I’m also deeply grateful to my clients who took a chance on me. I am honored they trusted me with their brands, and they have helped me grow my expertise and refine my process.
