Daily Inspiration: Meet Austin Lindsay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Lindsay

Hi Austin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started taking photos of flowers I thought were pretty on my Sanyo flip phone. And posting them on MySpace. I remember a surprising amount of people telling me how much they liked them. It was probably only 4 people, but it was enough to get a “real camera” (which was a 4-megapixel point-and-shoot) and see what else I could photograph.
I started shooting my friends. Around that time Maxim and FHM were big, so I thought maybe I could shoot for them one day.

Also in that same era, I got a job in a warehouse and they had this promotional poster for an Ogio golf bag. It was of someone sitting on a motorcycle, in the middle of a putting green, with an Ogio golf bag on their back. The lighting, and the color, and the composition were amazing. I used to look at that image, and wonder endlessly how the photographer created it, and how I could shoot just like that.

And then I started trying to make my lighting more eye-catching and cinematic.

I think from there it was just continuing on the path to learning how to light well, that really lead me to where I’m at today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve never had any expectations to get to where I am now. So, without expectations, there are no struggles. But, as of this current moment, wanting to get back into freelance. There are tons of struggles. I want it to support me financially, so networking, reaching out to people from zero, and selling myself are some of the biggest struggles I currently face.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think I specialize in lighting. Whether it be people or products. I think that’s a big thing that sets me apart, and I’m proud of that.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’ve had lots of help from friends and other photographers. Honestly, those who helped me the most don’t even know it at all. It was seeing big commercial photographers in my area. Never really reached out to them but just trying to create work like they did helped me push myself.
