Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Taylor.
Hi Shawn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Our journey began several years before we ventured into assisted stretching. My partner and I started our careers working with children who have ADHD, ADD, OCD, Autism, and other neurological challenges. We were deeply passionate about helping these kids and their families, and it was incredibly fulfilling work.
However, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we were forced to pivot away from the work we loved. During this time, I was offered an opportunity to work with a friend who was opening one of the first assisted stretch studios in the state of Utah. It required a move from Arizona, but the chance to continue helping people and collaborate with others who share that passion was too good to pass up. We began working in these stretch studios and quickly realized how many similarities there were between working with kids and the principles of functional movement and neuroplasticity. We found that helping people improve their mobility also positively impacted their brain function, reinforcing our passion for this new path.
As we gained experience, we saw an opportunity to bring these benefits directly to the workplace. We realized that many people either hadn’t heard of assisted stretching or didn’t make time for it in their busy lives. This insight inspired us to expand into corporate settings, where we could help employees directly at their place of work.
Initially, we focused on providing assisted stretching, but as we interacted with HR managers and companies, we discovered the challenges they faced in promoting health and wellness across diverse workforces. Employees of different ages, health journeys, and locations—whether in-office or remote—needed solutions that were accessible and engaging.
This realization led us to evolve from simply offering assisted stretching to providing a wide range of wellness services. Today, Onsite Stretch & Wellness shines by addressing the diverse needs of modern workplaces. We offer engaging games, mobility assessments, rewards, cutting-edge wellness technology, and hands-on services that promote health and work-life balance— We also partner with several other local wellness companies that provide services that we don’t offer. This is a win-win-win which is how we make decisions about our business
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road. We’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way and learned some invaluable lessons as a result. Being unique in our business model has meant there aren’t many examples to follow, so we’ve had to carve our own path. Additionally, we’ve faced challenges due to layoffs and cutbacks in some of our client companies, which have directly impacted us. On the flip side, we’ve also had companies double down on our services because of the positive impact we’ve had on their employees’ morale. This was something we hadn’t initially anticipated, but it’s become a consistent piece of feedback from our clients—something we truly appreciate. These trials have made us stronger and more innovative, pushing us to think outside the box. It’s this drive that led us to expand our offerings, incorporating more variety, additional services, and cutting-edge tools.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Early in my professional career, I worked in IT and network administration, a field I was well-educated and trained in. However, my path took a significant turn due to a personal experience with one of my children. I was searching for ways to help him and came across Brain Balance, a company that specializes in working with kids who have neurological challenges. My natural curiosity and desire to understand how and why things work led me from being a concerned parent to becoming deeply involved with Brain Balance. I didn’t just want answers; I wanted to make a difference. This is how I found my true passion—working with and helping people. I loved it so much that I didn’t mind the long hours or the low pay. I was fascinated by the human brain, the studies on how the gut connects to the brain, and how these elements shape who we are.
If it weren’t for COVID, I would likely still be at Brain Balance, working with kids. But when the pandemic forced a change, I transitioned into the field of assisted stretching. I threw myself into learning everything I could about it, and it didn’t take long for me to start seeing the parallels between helping kids improve their neurological function and helping athletes and others improve their mobility. I continued to push the boundaries of my profession, becoming certified in multiple stretching modalities like AIS (Active Isolated Stretching), PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation), and FST (Fascial Stretch Therapy).
What sets us apart at Onsite Stretch & Wellness is the unique combination of these advanced stretching techniques with our background in working with children through movement. We bring a depth of understanding and a passion for helping people that is hard to find elsewhere. I’m most proud of how we’ve taken something that started as a personal journey and turned it into a service that has a profound impact on the lives of others. Our work is about more than just stretching; it’s about improving overall well-being, whether it’s for athletes, office workers, or anyone needing to move their bodies better. And while I’ve transitioned away from IT, I’m still a computer geek at heart, which is why we’ve implemented a number of cutting-edge wellness devices like The Shiftwave Chair, Sens.Ai, and Myofascial Massage tools, and we are constantly on the lookout for new things all the time.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Utah is a special place, and I honestly can’t imagine starting a business anywhere else. I feel incredibly fortunate to have launched our business here, surrounded by amazing people who have been supportive and encouraging every step of the way. We have so many great clients and individuals who genuinely want to see us succeed, and that’s made all the difference.
When it comes to finding a mentor or building a network, I think what’s worked best for us is approaching everything with a spirit of helpfulness and support. I’ve always believed in the idea that if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. While the journey has been—and continues to be—extremely challenging, I truly love what I do. I think people can sense that passion and genuine desire to help others, and it makes them want to help us in return.
One of the most incredible experiences we’ve had was when a local Utah business owner helped us make one of our largest purchases of wellness technology—without expecting anything in return. This offer came after just a five-minute conversation, and he was the one who brought it up and offered to help. Who does that? It’s moments like these that reaffirm my belief that when you give love and support, it comes back to you many times over. We’ve found that when people experience the positive impact of our services, they naturally want to support us.
So my advice is simple: be genuine, be passionate about what you do, and always be willing to help others. When you approach your work with love and a true desire to make a difference, you’ll find that people are more than willing to support you in return. Networking and finding mentors isn’t just about asking for help—it’s about building relationships where support flows both ways.
