Inspiring Conversations with Lindsey Knight of Own It Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Knight

Hi Lindsey , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I had a dream when I was a little girl to one day fall in love with a prince who would start a family with me and live happily ever after. I fought for that dream for 14 years until one day I broke. I finally opened my eyes to my own reality and filed for divorce.

My story started when my patience and tolerance ended. I had endured 14 years of abuse and made the terrifying decision to finally leave. I was a stay-at-home mom, with no degree, very little job experience, and the question “ What in the actual hell are you going to do?” crossed my mind daily. I started a job writing SOPs for a small company out of Salem, Ut. I learned a lot about the various structures and processes for companies all over the world. I studied the business models on my own and decided that I could start my own drop ship company. I did A LOT of research, followed my heart, and dove head first into creating my first company Lulu Lighting Co. making custom acrylic/led neon signs.

It has been the hardest adjustment over the last 3 years and I have worked my butt off (and still am). I had to sit back and watch as he used his established credit and brand new job (making more money than he ever has) to build a brand new house and an established life in a family neighborhood while I lived in government-subsidized housing.

However, I am now working on starting my second business, a process documentation coaching course, and writing a book! And I would make the same decision 1 million times over for one reason and one reason alone. My three girls. My leaving has given them permission to have boundaries, permission to stand up for themselves, and most importantly it has taught them what it looks like to believe in yourself.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In my experience, there are no smooth roads in life and if you feel like you are on one…just buckle up it will most assuredly get bumpy LOL. The things I have faced over the last few years vary from not having any job experience, established credit, or capital to start a business to being forced to leave my home and live in a very very small government-subsidized twin home with my three girls. Don’t get me wrong, I am so grateful to have a roof over our heads and food to eat. But it has been a learning experience for all of us. But, I know we will all be better for it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Own It Consulting is a process documentation coaching business that specializes in helping small business owners create more efficient ways to onboard and train employees. We coach them through creating a training program for all new and existing employees. Effectively our goal is to alleviate the burden of time it takes for either the business owners themselves or current employees to take an excessive amount of time out of their workday training new employees or even answering endless questions from existing ones. I am most proud of the name “Own it” for its dual meaning. Obviously being a business “owner” is one meaning. However, I am passionate about accountability as a business owner and all too often we are the bottlenecks of our own growth. I have found that generally, it comes down to one of two things….fear or pride….or both! Understandably we are very protective over this baby that is our business. We have sacrificed so much of our own time to get it to where it is and handing it over to anyone to operate without us micro-managing every step can be scary. Owning your part in the lack of growth within your own business is a pride check for sure, but if business owners can own what they need to, take feedback when it comes, and be open to new ideas the scaling and growth they can experience will be worth it every time!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
So so many. I grew up on a dairy farm in northern Utah. I was my Dad’s little shadow. I followed him everywhere. He would put me up on the wheel well of the tractor and drive me all over the farm while he worked. Summer nights catching frogs, and riding bikes. There were so many things I loved about growing up.
