Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Cook
Hi Kate, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Camille and I met running a trail race in southern Utah two and a half years ago. We camped outside of Zion National Park and she told me her dream of creating a sauna and bathhouse in our home city – Salt Lake City. Her passion and commitment to a dream was inspiring and stayed in my mind. Several months later I reached out to see how things were moving along and she asked if I would want to partner and make this dream come to life. We decided on the name Glow together and began the work from the ground up. Looking for spaces, creating a business plan, figuring out financing and talking about Glow and what it should and shouldn’t be. Camille and I are both former public school teachers and we are yogis who share values. We are also athletes who love to trail run, ski, bike etc. but realize that there are not enough places to restore and slow down. Two years after beginning the work from an idea we are open and operating a beautiful bathhouse with a studio space to practice yoga, breathwork and meditation and we have truly built our dream.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Building Glow, considering all that go wrong, has been a smooth road for the most part. We were very fortunate to move through construction on time and were able to open our doors to business mid-August of 2024 which was our ultimate plan. Camille and I are both hard workers, absolutely determined, and problem solvers amongst other strengths. We also know that building our dream would take a team and we have had, and continue to have, amazing people helping us along the way. Celebrating the grand opening of Glow was an incredible feeling to have so many people that helped us on our journey be together in our space.
When you begin telling people about your idea for a new business will receive all the feedback whether you ask or not. Staying committed to the dream and trusting each other through difficult times was challenging and also so rewarding.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Camille and I both have background as public school teachers. We care about equity and community. We are also both yoga and breathwork instructors and care about well-being. We are also mothers which is a full-time job in itself! These values form the foundation of Glow and the need we see in our city for spaces to reset and rejuvenate, to connect with others in authentic experiences. I also help my husband run a small business so I know first hand how hard it is to be an entrepreneur and small business owner. However, this hard work also gives huge reward and fulfillment. I like to say that Camille and I are busy but happy.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
It’s not easy to start your own business and people will tell you all kinds of things. Trust yourself, dig deep, and if you want it bad enough and believe hard enough it can happen. Learn to trust yourself and find support from people that believe in you and build you up. Also, take time for some self-care because stress is real.
