Meet Flavia Cornejo of Latina Traveler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Flavia Cornejo

Hi Flavia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I started traveling solo in 2007 I rarely saw other travelers who looked like or had similar upbringings. Because of the lack of representation it took me a while to feel confident enough to share my story online because I didn’t think it would be relatable to people I did see online. Eventually I realized that the lack of representation is exactly why I needed to share my story, so that others who didn’t see themselves represented could see they were not alone. That’s when I started to share my travel experiences on social media and then on my blog. I received so many encouraging comments from others who felt they just needed to see one person who looked like them to also take the leap and start traveling more and even solo. Today I inspire thousands of people monthly with my blog and even host group trips to create community and friendships around the world.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The first and biggest obstacle has been more of internal one, imposter syndrome. Thinking that my story wasn’t important enough or that it wouldn’t be inspiring to others, although now I see that is far from the truth. The second obstacle has been money. I’ve come to learn others in similar positions have had more monetary support from family members or partners that I myself have not had. That has made it longer to get to where I want to get to in my journey because I’ve had to do lots of things alongside my dream job to make it work for me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Latina Traveler started as a way to share my travel stories and experiences with my community but has since evolved to be a resource to help them travel solo, live abroad, and create community via the group trips I host. Due to my background, I have made it a point to share information in both English and Spanish to reach more people and have them feel included. I love that I’ve created a space where people feel comfortable and want to continue coming back to. Most of my trip attendees are repeat attendees with some having signed up for every trip I’ve offered. On my blog or socials, you can expect to find tips, resources, hidden gems, digital maps to make your solo travels easier, and bucket list group trips to have amazing experiences in community.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see travel being a lot more representative of the people who do travel, but also people staying closer to home. The environment is a big concern for many, but as avid travelers I feel people will want to explore what neighboring cities or towns have to offer without having to get on a long haul flight.
