Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Powell
Hi Mason, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Originally from Upstate NY, growing up with a Lacrosse stick in your crib is very common. The game of Lacrosse, commonly known as the medicine game, has been a massive part of my life ever since I could remember. Playing against elite level competition all over the world for the past 30 years and realizing that this sport I love exist in every corner and crevasse of the globe, inspired me to grow and teach it where ever I ended up. When I landed in SLC a decade ago, I knew I wanted to spread the medicine game as much as I could.
I was fortunate enough to meet and be accepted by the Utah Lacrosse community and slowly built a group of best friends that all had one thing in common; we missed the competitive side of the game. They don’t tell you when your college lacrosse career is over, the competition dies off. You are limited to pick-up games and beer leagues. When I heard of our league, BLL(Box Lacrosse League), I knew this was my chance to build not only a team, but a family.
2024 the Wasatch Whalers was born! We compiled a team of 30 ex college and ex pro players who missed the competitiveness and team dynamics just as much as I did. We had know idea how we would stack up against the competition or if anyone would even care that we were playing.
Fast forward to the end of our season, We average 300-400 Whalers fans at our home games at Sports City and going undefeated in our home barn. Playing teams that are spread out across the US throughout the season and finally competing against all of them in Chicago in attempts to bring home the Harvest Classic Cup. Unfortunately, we were just short of our goal of winning it all, but left Chicago with a bronze medal. This is the highest any Utah team has ever finished in the league and has solidified us as the most prominent team in Utah!
We are looking forward to our 2025 season, starting in June, to finally bring the Cup back home!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
They’re always struggles with anything that you decided to start up. Hidden problems you would never think of. The biggest problem we ran into was attempting to find a place to play our home games. Since Box Lacrosse is played indoors in a hockey rink style arena, there are only a few places we could choose from. All of these places are indoor soccer arenas, which unfortunately don’t allow Lacrosse in their facility.(don’t ask me why)
We had to settle on Sports City in Draper, UT(which is an amazing facility) for our first season, but look forward to attempting to switch our home barn up for the upcoming 2025 season. Stay Tuned!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In my bias opinion, we are the most fun team to watch in the BLL! We pride ourselves on going all out, hitting hard, dropping the gloves to fight, and scoring highlight goals almost consistently.
The efforts from the Whalers has proven to be beneficial because it has attracted fans to come support our new team and that has really set us apart from every other team.
When we travel to places like Denver, Milwaukee, Chicago, etc. You won’t see more than 10-20 people in the stands, when you come to the Whalers house, make sure you get there early because it’s going to be PACKED!!!
We easily have the best fans and we can’t thank the Utah Lacrosse community for consistently showing up, wearing our merchandise, cheering their heads off, and firing up the entire team to play the best game they possibly can!
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I was fortunate enough to grow up with 3 older brothers who were all inducted into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame. So for me growing up, we were constantly traveling to watch and play in games. I have seen my brothers win National Championships, Professional Championships, and World Championships. However, growing up from humble beginnings, we couldn’t afford to travel for every game. This fact created my favorite and most vivid childhood memory.
My parents and I would load up the car with snacks and drive to the tallest hill in our small town of Carthage,NY just so we could get radio reception to be able to listen to my brothers game. You would think it’d be pretty boring for a young kid, but when you and your parents cheer just as loud in the car as they would in the stands, it made for an exciting time! Every goal we would be going nuts, especially if we heard it was scored by one of the Powell brothers.
