Today we’d like to introduce you to Fabrizzio Cotrino
Hi Fabrizzio, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My passion for music has always been a huge thing in my life. I was born in Colombia, and ever since I was a child, I have loved listening to music on the radio. There was a specific radio show that I loved, which was called “World Dance Music”, it was a show from Luis Lopez, a radio legend in the EDM scene, and he used to broadcast every Friday from 8 to 9 pm. Listening to this every week is the main reason why I fell in love with EDM. When I started my teenage years, I got a little away from music though, but then in 2021, me and my family moved to the US and had the opportunity to start from scratch. At this moment, I realized that I always loved music, but never put the necessary attention or effort, so I decided to start pursuing this new goal of becoming a music producer/DJ. After saving some money, I was able to buy a laptop, some headphones, and a MIDI controller, and I started to learn to produce music by watching tons of YouTube videos and tutorials on the internet, and playing around and having fun creating random sounds or songs. In the fall of 2022, I moved to Utah, to study music at Snow College. My first year was very tough, I felt like a black sheep because it is a classical and jazz-oriented college, and all I listened to was EDM. Fortunately, everything changed for me when one of my professors told me Snow College had a DJ console, but no one used it. I asked if I could play around with it for a while, and it was that exact day when I was listening to “Next Level” (That is the new name of the show I used to listen to when I was a kid), and Luis Lopez announced a competition called DJ Promises, for all Latin American DJ’s with awesome prices, opportunities and the final being held in Mexico. I had only about a month, to learn how to DJ, which meant so much hard work, late nights, and early mornings, but I was able to send my audition to this competition, which had around 1200 participants. I was able to qualify for the final 4 and win the competition final held in Guadalajara, Mexico, despite never performing in front of an audience before. This achievement was a great first step for my career as an artist, and it was a dream come true. Playing music in front of so many people and making them feel the way I feel when I listen to music became my goal in life, my purpose. Ever since then, I’ve been working and working and working, producing music by myself, or collaborating with some other great artists and musicians, and it has been such an incredible journey. I’ve learned so much and enjoyed it like never in my life, and I’m even more excited because I know this is just the first step, and I have such a long way to go, but I’m sure it will be such a fun journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been easy. Even though it hasn’t been very long, I’ve had a lot of obstacles and blocks in my way. Being away from home and away from my family has been for sure one of the toughest. They are my support, my strength, my pillar, and they are one of the big reasons why I’m doing this, and not having them with you to celebrate your victories or to go through your defeats, is very hard. Being alone has taught me a lot of things, and has helped me to grow a lot as a human being, to have much clearer goals, and to appreciate what I have.
Also, it’s been hard for me to find a balance in my life. Trying to go and make some friends and have some fun, but at the same time work on my music, practice my DJ skills, go play at gigs, learn, and also keep up with college, is a big challenge for me. The good thing, is that I know that all this sacrifice that I’m making will pay off, and it will be totally worth it one day, so this, combined with the fact that everything that I do, is fun and I enjoy it in a certain way, are the things that help me to keep pushing myself every day a little bit more
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a music producer/DJ. My genre of focus is (EDM), but I’ve been experimenting a lot with all types of different genres helping other artists produce their music, such as country, pop, rap, hip hop, etc. I love music, and I’m not particularly eager to close my musical taste to only one genre, which many people do. I enjoy and focus on the message of a song, and how it makes me feel, not on the genre or type of music. This has helped me a lot to understand and learn from each world of music and then allows me to apply it to my projects. I’m also a DJ of all types of music, and this is very useful for my producer career because it helps me understand and learn how to read an audience, how to know what they like, and what they will dance and jump to, so then, I can use it in my music.
Now, I will say one of the things that sets me apart from others, is my very contagious energy, and the way I can express myself just with my music and my body expressions. I’m a very happy and euphoric person, and with my songs and my sets, I express it very well and make people feel that same euphoria on the dancefloor. I am very proud of every project that I make because I know that each one of them is going to teach me a valuable lesson, and will get me one step closer to my goal.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I started my career this year, and ever since then, I’ve had a lot of improvement and growth as a person and as an artist. I’ve had a lot of opportunities and have known a lot of people who will help me in the future. If I’m being honest, I’m not sure where this path will take me, but the dream and my vision is to be able to live out of this and to travel around the world sharing my music and my message to people from different cultures and beliefs. Doesn’t matter if it is for 5, 20, or 2 million people, if the message is shared and understood by the audience, that will be enough. I also want to be able to play at some of the biggest EDM music festivals, such as Ultra, EDC, Tomorrowland, Untold, etc, and in nightclubs from all over the globe. I want to also grow my brand, by having a team who helps me do all the things that an artist has to do: A cameraman, manager, light and audio guys, marketing guy, tour manager, designer, etc., and be able to create a work family with these guys.
