Today we’d like to introduce you to Sasa Yaga
Hi Sasa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
During the Covid lockdown, all the tattoo shops were closed and I couldn’t get a new tattoo. I knew the history about handpoke tattoos and I thought you myself “I could probably do that”. I ordered a handpoke kit online and received it in the mail, I looked about safety and hygiene practices used by tattoo artists and followed along the best I could while at home and started tattooing myself.
As places and bars started to open up again, my friends and other people kept asking me who did my tattoos. When I told them I was the one who did them, a lot of people asked if I could tattoo them as well. This motivated me to pursue a tattoo apprenticeship and learn the correct way!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I found myself having relative ease with the tattoo practice itself, as well as marketing and gaining clients. During an apprenticeship, it’s known to be a hard time as there’s no income from this time. Unless you have a part time job on the side, apprentices dont make a liveable income. I experienced challenges with this myself however I got myself through my apprenticeship by committing all my time, money and energy into it to become licensed.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a first year tattoo artist that specializes in blackwork tattoos, specifically portraits, fine art, Gothic architecture, engravings and Old World style pieces.
People recognize my work from its texture and how dark the pieces are. I take Old World works of art and translate them into tattoos. With a plethora of beautiful works of fine art spanning hundreds of years, there are so many artists that remain unknown to the masses who gave us incredible pieces. I’m most proud of my portraiture that I do in this style, and bringing these lost and known works of art to a new medium.
Any big plans?
With my work I’ve been so grateful for all the different people I’ve met, and the travels I’ve been able to do because of it. I plan on opening a crypt-themed tattoo studio in Salt Lake City to combine my outward aesthetic of vampires, architecture and the macabre with fine art, classical music and history. My future involves creating an inclusive and hygienic, tattoo studio for those all walks of life who desire an Old World style tattoo!
