Life & Work with Melissa Grant of Salt Lake City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Grant

Hi Melissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My first introduction to interior design came working in Big Sky, Montana. The projects felt in scale comparable to the state they were located in. I spent time coordinating custom furniture from brands such as Joseph Jeup, Bright Chair, and FBC London. Paired with these high-end brands I also spent time finding pieces in the rustic corners of Montana, selecting items from auctions, finding a one-of-a-kind barber chair in a garage, and even pulling an old ski resort chair out of the weeds of the owners back yard. Through it all, I found I really loved the art of story telling. The Wasatch has always been my home and I gladly found my way back to the state of Sunny Utah. I worked in Park City for a few years until I decided to take the leap to realize my true dream which was starting Evil Eye Studios. Based on all the principals that I find near and dear, my designs focus on textiles, balancing elements, Feng Shui, and of course, the story.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If it were a smooth road I think every one would take it! I tend to travel by backroads, willingly and gladly. There are bumps, yes, but in it I have found additional beauty that I wouldn’t trade for traveling the smooth freeway. Some bumps hit harder than others, but I’m a problem solver and thrive in that environment. One of the obstacles is my own expectations. Sometimes I want things to move at quicker pace, but I’ve been practicing the art of letting nature run it’s course in life and in business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I take the very complicated process of designing a custom home and make it easy for my client. My services range from drawing out floor plans, building your budget, helping you design your dream fireplace to selecting fabrics, coordinating subcontractors, and drawing custom furniture pieces.
I’m known for applying the principals of Feng Shui to modern design. Effortlessly balancing the amounts of wood, metal, stone, fire, and water that are in put into a home. My goal is for people to live in harmony with their home and landscape. Nature is such a part of us and I love incorporating biophilic design into a home.
I’m really proud of the relationships I’ve built along my journey. I truly am so lucky to get to work with vendors, clients, and contractors that have become close friends. Human connection is so valuable and I just appreciate the community I live and work in.

What’s next?
Oh I always have plans and projects in the works! The blessing of being a creative! There’s a book proposal I’m excited to spend some more time working on and I have plans to work on putting together a team to spend one week a year updating and furnishing the homes of families in need. I have a huge passion for historic preservation and plan to take on more preservation projects in the community.
