Inspiring Conversations with Afia Chin of Telepathica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Afia Chin

Afia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story begins with a fire—a drive to create, inspire, and transform the way we see ourselves and the world around us. I’ve always had a knack for turning the abstract into something tangible, whether through visual art, storytelling, modeling, or speaking. Even as a kid, I wasn’t just dreaming; I was building, crafting, and imagining a world bigger than the one in front of me.

Over the years, I realized my purpose wasn’t just about creating for myself; it was about helping others unlock their own creativity and potential. That’s how Telepathica came to life. My business partner, Laurel Adams, and I wanted to build something bold—a firm that empowers artists and creative businesses to imagine, design, and execute a version of themselves they didn’t think was possible. With services like elevation coaching, public appearance preparation, and 360 reviews, we help clients shift how they see themselves, so they can show up as their fullest, most unapologetic selves.

Today, I wear a lot of hats: spoken word and visual artist, speaker, creative consultant, and advocate for marginalized voices. Through it all, my mission is clear—I’m here to make creativity a tool for transformation. Whether I’m working with an individual artist or consulting on a massive organizational rebrand, my goal is always the same: to push boundaries and help people see their own magic.

This journey hasn’t been easy or linear, but that’s what makes it mine. I’ve learned that creativity isn’t just about what you make—it’s about how you use it to shape your life, tell your story, and lift up those around you. And this is just the beginning. The vision keeps growing, and I’m ready to keep dreaming, building, and inspiring.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. The road has been anything but smooth. My journey has been full of twists, turns, and some moments that broke me before they could build me back up.

One of the most defining struggles came in 2018 when I survived sexual assault. That experience shattered so much of who I thought I was and left me questioning my worth, my safety, and my purpose. Healing from that hasn’t been just about moving forward—its been about completely redefining how I show up for myself. My healing journey has taught me to reclaim my voice, my body, and my power in ways I never imagined.

On top of that, living with ADHD, PTSD, and BPD means navigating the world with a brain that often feels like it’s working against me. There were days when the overwhelm feels insurmountable, where self-doubt whispers louder than my dreams. But those challenges have taught me resilience. They force me to lean into my creativity and use it as a tool for survival, expression, and healing.

Building my career and my brand as a first generation Ghanian-Chinese-Trinidadian American born, Black queer woman in creative industries has been another mountain to climb. Systemic barriers, tokenism, and having to prove my worth time and time again have been exhausting. But each challenge has been a reminder of my strength and a motivator to create spaces where others don’t have to face the same struggles.

The road has been rocky, but it’s also been beautiful. Every hardship I’ve faced has carved a deeper sense of empathy and purpose in me. They’ve pushed me to build something bigger than myself, to stand tall in my truth, and to remind others that even in our most broken moments, we are still whole.

I won’t sugarcoat it—there have been tears, breakdowns, and doubts. But there’s also been growth, joy, and the unshakable belief that my story is worth telling and my dreams are worth chasing.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At the heart of everything I do is storytelling. Whether it’s through spoken word, as a speaker, or as the co-owner of Telepathica, I focus on helping people connect to the deeper, often unseen parts of themselves and the world around them. My work is about challenging perceptions and inspiring transformation—both in individuals and in the spaces they create.

As a spoken word artist and speaker, I’ve built a reputation for using words to uplift, provoke, and empower. My performances are raw and unapologetic, blending poetic rhythms with personal truths that resonate on a soul level. I specialize in making people feel—feel seen, heard, and ready to act. Whether I’m on stage sharing my story or delivering a keynote, my goal is always to leave people better than I found them.

Then there’s Telepathica, the creative firm I co-own, which takes the same energy I bring to my individual work and amplifies it for artists and creative businesses. We specialize in professional and creative development services that push our clients to think limitlessly. From image consulting to branding, we help them unlock their potential and present themselves as bold, forward-thinking leaders in their industries.

What sets me apart is my ability to merge vulnerability with power. I don’t shy away from the tough conversations or the messy parts of life—I embrace them. My lived experiences inform everything I do. They give me the kind of depth and authenticity that audiences and clients feel on a visceral level.

What I’m most proud of? It’s hard to choose. But I’d say I’m proudest of the spaces I’ve been able to create for others—whether it’s through my performances, workshops, or the transformative work we do at Telepathica. Seeing someone step into their power and own their story because of something I’ve said or helped them build? That’s what it’s all about.

What truly sets me apart is my holistic approach to creativity. For me, it’s not just about making something beautiful; it’s about making something meaningful. My work isn’t confined to one medium or one audience—it’s intersectional, inclusive, and built to last. Whether I’m on stage or behind the scenes, my mission is clear: to inspire, empower, and create a future where creativity knows no bounds.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’ve always had a complicated relationship with the idea of luck. When I look at my life and career, I don’t think it’s ever been about pure chance—it’s been about perspective and how I respond to what comes my way.

Bad luck? Oh, I’ve had my fair share. From personal traumas to professional setbacks, there have been plenty of moments that could’ve knocked me off course.

On the flip side, I’ve had moments of what others might call good luck. Meeting the right people at the right time or stumbling into opportunities that aligned perfectly with my vision has felt serendipitous. But even those moments weren’t purely accidental. I believe good luck finds you when you’ve laid the groundwork, stayed true to your purpose, and shown up ready to seize it.

In both life and business, luck—good or bad—has been a catalyst rather than a defining factor. Bad luck has taught me lessons I couldn’t have learned otherwise, and good luck has amplified the effort I’ve already put in. But ultimately, it’s my willingness to adapt, persevere, and grow that’s made the difference.

So, while I’ll never dismiss the role of luck, I give more credit to the choices I’ve made and the people I’ve chosen to surround myself with. Luck may open the door, but it’s your work, your vision, and your ability to keep going that determine whether you walk through it and thrive.
