Life & Work with Coleman Andersen of Salt Lake City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Coleman Andersen

Hi Coleman, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began photography in my teenage years. My mom let me borrow her DSLR, and I remember taking pictures of flowers at the park. My parents were always supportive of my photos and encouraged me to continue to pursue photography. They bought me a camera for Christmas, a Canon T3, and that was it. I began to take the camera everywhere I went. Skating, snowboarding, hiking and parties. I really enjoyed photographing my friends and capturing memories of those care free years of our lives.

Once I graduated high school I pursued an education at Salt Lake Community College. I took the Photo 1 class my first year. This is when I learned the technicality of the camera as well as how to develop and print black and white film. A defining moment. I started to see the potential of photography as a career more than a hobby. I completed the SLCC photo program in 2019. I am grateful to my professors, and all of the peers that I met during those years.

Fast forward to now. I’ve been full time freelance in the photo and film industry for 3 years. I currently work as a commercial photographer, with a focus on athletics. I try to push the limits outside of a traditional athletics approach. Capturing motion in movement, intimacy in the subject, and creating colors and shapes not usually seen in sports.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Making a career out of something that I’m passionate about and love has always been a bumpy road. The biggest challenge I’ve faced this year is balancing work and family. Being a photographer can require a lot of travel and time spent away from home. It is important to me to not allow my work to fully envelop all aspects of my life, and to take time away from being behind the camera. I believe this also enables me to think more freely, and create original ideas.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Professionally, I do a lot of commercial work that varies from fashion to editorial, and athletics.

Artistically, I like to photograph portraits and moments from my personal life. I enjoy experimenting with film photography and printing in my home darkroom.
