Today we’d like to introduce you to Debbie Jenkins
Hi Debbie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Wasatch Roller Derby has been bringing fast-paced, full-contact action to the Wasatch Front since 2008. As a skater-run, nonprofit organization, we’ve built a league that thrives on athleticism, inclusivity, and community.
Over the years, we’ve evolved to meet the needs of our growing league while staying true to the rebellious, empowering spirit of roller derby. Now operating under Salt Lake Roller Derby, we proudly stand alongside our sibling leagues—Uinta Roller Derby, Beehive Skate Revolution, and Wasatch Juniors Roller Derby—working together to grow and strengthen the sport in our community.
Together, we’ve built a strong, interconnected roller derby community, providing opportunities for skaters of all ages and skill levels. Whether it’s junior skaters taking their first laps, new recruits learning the game, or seasoned competitors representing us on the national and international stage, we’re committed to making roller derby accessible and empowering for all.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but challenges are part of the journey in a grassroots, skater-run league like ours. Keeping a competitive league thriving requires relentless dedication, adaptability, and countless volunteer hours. Over the years, we’ve had to navigate everything from league management hurdles to rebuilding after the COVID-19 shutdown. Getting skaters back on the track, regaining our competitive edge, and re-engaging with our community took time—but our love for the sport never wavered.
Being entirely skater-operated brings its own unique set of obstacles. We don’t just compete; we handle recruitment, training, event planning, and league operations—all while striving to push ourselves on the track. It’s a constant balancing act, but one we embrace because it allows us to shape a league that reflects our values.
In today’s social and political climate, maintaining an inclusive and affirming space is more important than ever. Traditional sports haven’t always welcomed everyone, but roller derby has a history of breaking barriers. We are committed to ensuring that all skaters, officials, and supporters—regardless of gender identity, race, background, or ability—feel safe, valued, and empowered to be part of this community. Through every challenge, our mission remains the same: to build a league that is competitive, inclusive, and driven by the fierce spirit of roller derby.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Wasatch Roller Derby is known for our competitive spirit, commitment to community, and dedication to inclusivity. We are a skater-run, nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for athletes of all skill levels—from experienced competitors to brand-new skaters looking to try something new. Our league features competitive travel teams, home teams, and recreational programs, offering a place for everyone who wants to be part of this fast-paced, full-contact sport.
What sets us apart is our strong sense of community and our dedication to accountability, equity, and empowerment. We believe roller derby is more than just a sport—it’s a space where people can challenge themselves, build confidence, and form lifelong friendships. Our league is committed to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment while maintaining the fierce, high-energy competition that derby is known for.
Brand-wise, we are most proud of our resilience and passion. Through challenges like the COVID-19 shutdown, we’ve rebuilt stronger than ever, proving that the Wasatch Roller Derby spirit doesn’t quit. But beyond bouncing back from obstacles, we’re focused on moving forward—advocating for equity in sports, standing by our members in the face of personal, social and political challenges, and making sure that everyone who wants to be part of derby has the opportunity to do so.
In today’s world, creating an inclusive and affirming space is not just a goal—it’s a responsibility. We recognize that many people are looking for a place where they can be themselves without fear of discrimination or exclusion. At Wasatch Roller Derby, we actively work to ensure that everyone—regardless of gender identity, race, background, or ability—feels safe, valued, and empowered to participate fully. Sports can be a powerful force for change, and we believe that roller derby, with its culture of resilience and rebellion, is uniquely positioned to push back against harmful narratives and provide a community that uplifts and supports all its members.
What does success mean to you?
At Wasatch Roller Derby, success isn’t just measured by our performance in competition—it’s about the strength and inclusivity of our community. Success is seeing skaters grow in confidence, push past their limits, and support one another both on and off the track. It’s about fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of background or experience, feels welcome and empowered.
Of course, we love to compete and strive for excellence in the sport, but our biggest victories come from the personal milestones we achieve. Whether it’s a rookie making their game debut, a skater returning after injury, or someone simply finding their voice and confidence within our league, those moments define what success means to us.
Beyond that, success is ensuring that Wasatch Roller Derby remains a safe, inclusive, and affirming space—one that continues to grow, adapt, and inspire others to be fearless, both on the track and in life.
We want readers to know that roller derby is for everyone—no matter your background, experience level, or fitness journey, there’s a place for you in our league. Whether you’re looking to skate, officiate, volunteer, or just be part of the excitement, we welcome all to join us. Catch us in action at one of our high-energy bouts or attend an open recruitment event to see what roller derby is all about.
