Meet Rebecca Cohen of RMC Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Cohen. Them and their team share their story with us below:

RMC Counseling was started in November of 2018 by Rebecca Cohen, LCSW. She opened the practice as a result of feeling unheard and unsupported as an employee of a different group practice and wanted to create a different experience for therapists and their clients. RMC Counseling is a group therapy practice that serves clients across the lifespan and provides quality psychotherapy from highly trained therapists.

RMC Counseling started as a solo practice with just one therapy provider before becoming a group practice in 2019. The director, Rebecca Cohen, made the decision to bring on two providers in the fall of 2019 and realized quickly the growing demand for therapy services in Utah and continued to hire more providers until there were 5 clinicians by January of 2020. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March of 2020, Rebecca made the decision to move all services to telehealth and prioritize the safety of her staff and clients. Rebecca also decided to continue to hire more therapists as the demand for therapy services for children, adolescents and adults continued to grow. By the summer of 2020, the practice had grown to ten providers. Currently, there are 16 therapy providers which include two therapy interns. RMC also has a director of the administration who oversees and manages a team of two other administrative assistants. RMC therapists continue to provide telehealth therapy for those who need and want it as well as in-person therapy so there is a “hybrid” of services offered.

RMC’s mission is to provide clients with warmth, non-judgment and high-quality counseling. Our goal is to continue to grow and evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of our Utah community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been smooth. When the COVID-19 pandemic began in March of 2020, RMC unexpectedly and quickly had to move all services to telehealth. There were some definite learning curves along the way and luckily, there were resources and support that allowed us to get through that time and continue to operate and grow.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about RMC Counseling?
Our agency is comprised of 16 therapists and 3 administrative staff who keep the business up and running. The therapists on our team each have their own specialty or niche that they specialize in. We have a team of pediatric counselors who are well versed in play therapy and family systems approaches. We have couples therapists as well as individual therapists who specialize with teens, adults, and older adults. In addition, many of us are trauma-informed therapists who are trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).

How do you define success?
Success for me looks like an agency composed of clinicians who are able to embody work-life balance and have a high quality of life and thus provide high-quality therapy for people in the community who need it. I want RMC Counseling to be a changemaker and significant presence in the community so people know to look to us when they need support for life stressors, trauma or relationship issues.
