Check Out Alex Elggren’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Elggren.

Hi Alex, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Cottonwood Heights to a pretty musical family. My parents both play musical instruments and all the kids in my family play at least one instrument. There is always music in our house: Piano, of course, but you’ll also hear the guitar, French horn, maybe violin, drums – you name it. My mom especially encouraged us to all learn music as a way of expressing ourselves and learning to create and apply ourselves. My 15-year-old brother is also a really accomplished musician. My musical journey began when I started piano and violin at age four. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve traded the violin for a guitar and have definitely focused on piano and singing – I love it. Things really got going for me when I joined One Voice Children’s Choir at age nine. Being in the choir has given me so many amazing experiences and opportunities to grow as a performer: music videos, tours, and many live performances. I’ve also had opportunities to work with incredible people at Draper Philharmonic and Choral Society. I’ve been able to record music with several terrific Utah songwriters and other artists. Lately, I’ve also really taken to musical theater – it was kind of outside my comfort zone but it is such a rush to be on stage acting, singing, and even dancing before hundreds of people. One of the things I’ve really loved is when covid hit, some friends and I started our own music group called Voices Elevated and began arranging and producing our own music and videos, we almost have 100,000 views on YouTube between our five videos! Not bad for five kids making their own music. I’ve had the opportunity to sing solo pieces at The Eccles Theater, Abravanel Hall, and The Rose Wagner Theater among other Utah venues. I feel very blessed that I’ve been able to express myself creatively with so many wonderful people all across Utah and even a few places outside the state.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
You know, I’ve been pretty fortunate, having a good family and being raised here in Utah where we have so many opportunities. As a homeschooler, I haven’t had some of the ready-made opportunities that kids in school might have, but I also have had more free time to explore all my options and really figure out what I want to do and explore the things that look new and exciting. Another struggle is just trying to find time and strike a balance between the demands of music and all the other things I want to explore and do like debate, nature, biology, engineering, and hanging out with friends.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I would say that I am a recording artist and performer, and I am most proud of my live performances and recording work. One of my most memorable performances was A Night Of Broadway with the Draper Philharmonic and Choral Society. Not only was it so much fun but I feel like it led to a lot of growth as a performer. I was also recently able to perform with Kurt Bestor at his yearly Christmas special at the Eccles – that was amazing! Another thing that’s been super rewarding is doing music videos because they have the potential to reach so many people and, hopefully, inspire and uplift them. One last thing: it’s been really rewarding to support Utah songwriters in bringing their creativity to the audience by recording their original songs.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First, my parents. My mom has been there every step of the way to help me get where I’m going – literally and figuratively. She almost always accompanies me to recordings and performances, but she also has helped guide my career so far. Really my whole family has been a big support – Mom and Dad, my older brother, Connor (who is an amazing musician – he arranges a lot of the music I’ve played), and even my grandparents have helped me get to where I am. My mentors, friends and fellow performers in One Voice, my teachers – I have been so blessed to be able to work with amazing people every step of the way.
