Today we’d like to introduce you to Alli Brown.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Music has been in my life for as long as I can remember. I was even in music classes when I was 2 years old! When I was young, I learned to play the piano, then the violin, then the upright bass, then the ukulele, then the guitar, and now can pick up pretty much any string instrument with ease.
The violin was probably in my life for the longest, which taught me to appreciate the classical side of music and helped train my ear. But when I learned the ukulele, I started to explore songwriting with lyrics and performing in front of crowds the way that I do now. The ukulele made me fall in love with being an artist.
I have been performing live for different crowds for well over 12 years now, getting my start when I was young. When I was a teenager, I had a friend who liked to sing at retirement homes around the valley and he always asked me to join him. For a few years, we went every month or so to sing at different retirement homes. It was a great experience and always put a smile on my face! I credit him for getting me comfortable singing in front of people.
I’ve always loved to perform and tried to do it as much as I can, but just in the past 3 years I’ve started creating a brand around myself and trying to build up my platform. I released my first single in May of 2022. It’s called “Some People Never Change”. This song is about something that happened to me while I was downtown one night and has a little bit of a country vibe to it.
Some People Never Change felt like a good start to getting my music available on streaming platforms. While this is the first song I officially released, I’ve written many songs before that one that I still perform regularly. I plan to release an EP at the end of this year, with the first single being released in late September.
Right now, I try to perform as much as I can to spread the word about my music. You can usually find me 2-3 nights a week singing somewhere! I’ve gotten to play at some really fun spots in the past year and have even ventured out of the state for gigs a few times! I’m excited to see where music can take me but it’s all about my deep love for it that keeps me going with it and growing with it. I’ve grown so much as an artist just in the past few years and am excited to share more of my sound with the world!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a musician is not a smooth road to go down. There’s a lot of self-doubt that comes with it. It’s been especially tough for me to get to a place where I felt like I could release music.
To me, performing live has never been an issue, but recording music is so much pressure for me. Probably because it feels so much more permanent than a live performance does, there’s a lot more pressure to get it perfect. I’m excited to finally get an EP out there though!
Also, in this industry, persistence can be key. A lot of times I end up getting the gig just because I keep reaching out to keep in contact with people. It can be kind of a defeating game if you don’t stay on it to get what you want.
What matters most to you?
Being a musician, relating with my audience is what matters most to me. I love when I play one of my songs and it resonates with someone. It creates this feeling of camaraderie that makes the world feel like a warmer place. Music is a feeling and if I can make you feel something, I feel like I’ve succeeded.
