Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Godin.
Hi Andrea, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started out in the music industry singing and performing when I was 11 years old. Over the years I was able to develop many skills such as songwriting, stage presence, and more due to a huge amount of experience I was gaining on stage, in studios, touring Canada, and marketing myself. I quickly learned that it’s best to be able to rely on only yourself in all aspects of your career.
When Salt Lake City’s own Starkillers reached out to work with me, I knew that I had to take the opportunity. Since then, he’s taught me an incredible amount of knowledge about music production, running my own label, and key factors regarding the music industry. This has allowed me to feel independent in my career which has been very empowering.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road which I’m sure most artists can relate to. On one of my upcoming Hip Hop/R&B records, I talk about one of the most substantial struggles I faced in regard to my previous managers attempting to derail my career and life as opposed to helping me build and accomplish my visions. It’s been many years since this occurred and I’m excited to finally share this story in musical form.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have a background in performing, writing, and recording a vast number of genres since I was very young. Ultimately, I ended up gravitating towards Dance/House music and R&B/Pop music which I have been focused on for the past 10 years.
I feel that being so involved with both styles of music has really been shaping my current sound and has really helped to make my songs stand out. I like to combine electronic elements with dark R&B, and soulful vocals and instrumentation. This is the sound that I have always been envisioning for myself and it’s almost surreal to hear it finally come to life.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
After coming from the large bustling city of Toronto, Salt Lake City is definitely more laid back which takes a bit of getting used to. I’ve realized that the relaxed nature of Salt Lake is very beneficial for creativity so I really enjoy coming here to write music. Being so close to the mountains and the outdoors really keeps you focused and I can’t say there is much I dislike about it here. On top of that, everyone I’ve met here makes you feel so welcome and treats you like family.
