Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Jeffery

Hi Anna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 1972, seven blind colleagues formed the Utah Council of the Blind (UCB) in hopes of creating resources for the blind community The Mission of the organization is to provide programs and services to all blind and visually impaired residents of Utah. These programs are geared to increase independence and self-reliance. In May of 1987, the organization received its 501 (c) 3 status. The UCB offers subsidized transportation services through Uber/Lyft and local cab companies. Driver mileage reimbursement, Training in blindness skills which teaches newly people of all ages as well as employ a blind person. Scholarships, Ceramics, and Pottery Classes, Adaptive Technology grants, Community Projects for those on the extreme low-income range to receive some help with their home. State training conferences, and Social, Recreational and Educational activities. The organization is run by volunteers. There are no paid staff. The President and Executive Director oversee the day-to-day business. Board Meetings are scheduled every other month throughout the year.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The organization has celebrated over 50 years of serving the blind residents of Utah. Providing unique services for this population always comes with challenges. Funding the programs is always challenging as markets fluctuate and available funds from foundations that the organization has partnered with can vary year to year.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the current President of the Utah Council of the Blind and serve in that Capacity. I am also a teacher of the blind helping those who are newly blind navigate and learn the essential blindness skills to remain independent and self-reliant. I am also a teacher in the public school system working with children with disabilities.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Being a proactive listener to the community. Understanding the struggles and being open to new innovative ideas to better support the programs of the organization. Thinking outside the limitations already set, and strategizing with peers.

Pricing:

  • Transportation services are 50% of the maximum
  • Adaptive Technology Grants are 25% of the cost with grants covering up to $1,000
