Today we’d like to introduce you to April Seekins.
Hi April, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started photography when my oldest son was 3 years old, in 1994 with film. I loved taking black-and-white photos and adding color to them. Everyone said my photos were very good so from there I honed my skills.
I didn’t understand business very well so I would only make a couple hundred dollars here and there, I had two more sons and went through a divorce. I had no financial support from family or from their father so I had to figure something out to support my three boys. I did the thing I thought I’d never do started working as a stripper and a sex worker. I hated what I was doing and searched for help and resources.
I came upon a book by Dani Johnson called “Spirit Driven Success” and started going to her entrepreneur training weekends all over the nation once a month. After 14 months of attending her training, I walked away from the sex industry for good in June of 2012 and again started my photography business at $0 and within 4 years I was making over six digits.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No not at all… Learning how to deal with people, learning how to deal with times when things didn’t turn out the way we had hoped. Learning the skill of having people work for me and training them. Marketing and pricing. Keep going when there are little or no results.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have two different businesses. April’s Photography and Spunky Photo Booths. April’s Photography specializes in capturing raw & authentic emotional moments in photographs. I photograph weddings, families, high school seniors, event photography, and corporate photography.
What set me apart is that I started with film over 25 years ago and I learned how to take the photos correctly in the camera so I do very little editing. I also use off-camera flash and have found not many photographers use flash. When I started using an off-camera flash it took my photography to the next level.
At Spunky Photo Booths we bring photo booths to events such as weddings, corporate parties, holiday parties, birthday parties, etc. What sets us apart is that I have over 25 years of photography and our photographs are very high quality using professional cameras and lighting.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t just study photography but study the business as well. Learn how to deal with people.
