Today we’d like to introduce you to Britty Marie.
Hi Britty , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always been a performer. I started when I was 8 years old. I am also autistic, but I didn’t put those pieces together until I was nearly 30 years old. Theater has always been my special interest, the one singular through line of my life. When the pandemic hit and all of the theaters shut down I found tikok and for the first time I got a chance to create my own content instead of performing other people’s work. It was incredibly satisfying and personally rewarding to have people respond to me and my random content. From there I’ve gone on to become an advocate and educator for autism and the autistic community. I still love making content and now I am using my platform to promote my coaching services for people both on and off of the spectrum.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t talk a lot about my childhood, but it was pretty rough. Superficially it all looked great from the outside. Middle upper class upbringing, raised in the Mormon church, big house, big family, but behind closed doors was another world entirely. Combine that with the struggles of growing up an undiagnosed autistic female, and let’s just say that I’ve pretty much single handedly kept the mental health profession in business. I am a huge advocate for therapy and meditation. The one thing I’ve always been is resilient. I’ve got something in me that just won’t let me quit.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
People usually know me from one of two sources. Either they have seen me perform on stage, or they have seen me on tikok. It’s funny because the people who recognize me from theater just see me as an actor, someone who plays a part; but the people who recognize me from TikTok seem to have a more familiar attitude towards me. I think that is just the nature of different kinds of art and creation. I can’t say that I love one more than the other, I just think life is basically just one giant piece of performance art. People think that performing means that it isn’t real or authentic, but I think that even if you are playing a part, you have to bring something real to it or else it will feel hollow and performative. It’s not about pretending to be someone else, it’s about stepping out of your own skin and becoming that character. You feel what they feel, see what they see, and then at the end of the day, you take them off and you step back into your own skin. That’s the thing about social media influences that I think people don’t understand. Yes it’s technically us that you are following, but even the most authentic creator is playing a part of sorts. We all are. Life is performance. We are all actors.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
No matter where I travel, Utah always feels like home. I love the topography, the wildlife, and how close everything is. I do at times miss the days where Utah felt more like the best kept secret in the country, but now that secret is out. I can’t blame people for wanting to move here. As long as they respect what our community built and respect nature, then all are welcome as far as I’m concerned. I love seeing Utah becoming more diverse and dynamic.
