Check Out Cammie Hurst’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cammie Hurst.

Hi Cammie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
When I was 20 I was in an emotionally abusive relationship. My boyfriend was very controlling over who I spent time with, what I ate, and what I wore, and when the relationship ended I felt completely broken. I didn’t know who I was anymore. I started working at a flower shop and started learning about flowers and the different meanings behind them.

During the Victorian era, flowers would be used to communicate in secret, so each flower was given a specific meaning. I noticed that the meanings of the flowers were often things that the giver loved about the receiver, and I often saw those attributes in the people around me, but I couldn’t see these beautiful things about myself.

I started to learn how to make flower crowns, and I started to make flower crowns with flowers of specific meanings for people, specifically flowers that represented things I loved about them. I soon began building flower crowns for myself to help myself see a physical representation of my beauty and beautiful inner qualities.

I started hosting workshops teaching other women how to build flower crowns and teaching them what the flowers represented and having extremely personal and raw conversations about why it is difficult to feel and see our beauty.

In 2021 I had my first miscarriage. This was different grief and was extremely hard to overcome. I felt so silenced in my loss and sought out other women who had experienced something similar. 1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss and it is often a loss that women mourn long after.

I decided to use flowers to heal once again and began making custom wreaths using birth flowers to represent a family and their angels. This physical representation of my family allowed me to begin healing, and also honor my angels.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has absolutely not been a smooth road. It can be so isolating to feel disconnected from your body or to not feel like the beauty standards represented in the media reflect what you see when you look at yourself.

Some of the biggest struggles have been overcoming my own insecurities as I began my business. I want to share a conversation about grief and loss, and loving yourself and your body in all circumstances, but it can be challenging for me some days, which is why I will continue to do what I do.

I never want a single woman or girl to feel like ending their life because they can not reach the beauty standards in the media or because they feel alone in their loss. We are all beautiful and different, and our stories deserve to be told.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a floral designer who specializes in workshop-based designs. I don’t do any wedding floristry, instead, I focus on teaching women how to design and how to design using flowers with purpose. By incorporating the language of flowers into designs, you can enhance the meaning and apply the meanings of flowers to yourself to have a tangible representation of yourself. This allows you to see yourself in your true beauty.

What are your plans for the future?
My goal is to have a flower shop attached to an event center. I would love to be the hub of Southern Utah for creative ways of healing and growth through flowers.

I am participating in several retreats that are aimed at connecting women with themselves and allowing them to heal.

Pricing:

  • Private Workshops starting at $100
  • Goddess night $50
  • Custom Angel wreaths starting at $99
