Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Newton
Hi Colin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been doing product design for over 15 years – products like skateboards, pressurized water tanks, medical devices, satellite travel cases, and now outdoor camping gear. Some of these products I designed myself under my own companies, and some of the products I’ve worked on were for hire to assist other companies get their product to market. My most recent company is Midnight Forest. We specialize in manufacturing outdoor camping gear while spreading awareness of public land access and the protection of wildlife.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would say our only struggle would be navigating the ever changing social media platforms and algorithms. We shoot big adventures and make long form videos and short IG reels from the footage. I never really know which one will get a large viewership and which ones will fail. Sometimes social media apps feel like throwing darts at a wall.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
With my previous knowledge of the industry and experience in product design, we have been able to capture a large market relatively quickly. I spend about 80 days a year out camping, hiking, hunting, and off-roading. With all of these days in the field I build knowledge on what products are out there and what can be improved upon. I create products with one simple rule -products that I need and would actually use myself in the field.
How do you think about luck?
I would say “luck” comes in the form of timing. With hundreds of other small business constantly creating new products, sometimes you can be “lucky” being the first to market. Being the first to market on any product makes a huge difference in sales and the acceptance of your brand.
