Check Out Diego Calderon’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diego Calderon

Hi Diego, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
started birding in 2000

2004 I was kidnapped by FARC guerrillas (https://www.science.org/doi/pdf/10.1126/science.304.5675.1223b)

started doing birding tours in 2007 (first Colombia and then to all over the Neotropical region) with my company COLOMBIA Birding (the first local criollo company offering it)

in 2018 after the Colombia peace deal with FARC guerrillas I joined an biological expedition with FARC ex-combatants (https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/article/colombia-biodiversity-farc-conservation)

in 2019 I started doing/sharing my talk BIRDWATCHING WITH FARC (that has now reached almost 10k people all over Colombia, USA, Spain, Mexico, Uganda, etc)

in 2019 I visited the VERY SAME guys that kidnapped me and we did a documentary about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF9rfNphh5I

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
not particularly smooth, but come on!, that’s been the cool thing about it! 😉

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
also did THE BIRDERS documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-jn1_thxK8

and loved doing DIGISCOPING that is digital photography through a spotting scope… most of my bird/nature posts are shot via this technique: https://www.instagram.com/diegocolbirding/

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
all the local birders and entrepeneurs and farmers thaht own any places we go birding: trails,, reserves, lodges, communitary projects, etc
