Check Out Hailey Petersen’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailey Petersen.

Hi Hailey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello! My name is Hailey Petersen. I’m a full-time content creator, vintage seller and stylist! I love colorful, secondhand, vintage and sustainable clothing.

I started posting my outfits on Instagram 3 years ago. I created it because I wanted to share the secondhand/thrifted outfits with more people! From there I started posting Thrift With Me videos on YouTube because I wanted to post more long form content. From there I started my Etsy shop so that I could share my love of vintage with my audience. From there I started my website offering my styling services!

All of this stems from my love of thrift shopping and secondhand fashion. I love finding high quality piece for less than $5.00, and I love sharing that with my audience!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any small business there were ups and downs! Social media is not always fun and the income isn’t always consistent. Luckily, I have the kindest followers/audience that has supported me through it all.

There were times my videos would go viral, which is awesome BUT virality brings a lot of mean and disturbing comments. Hate on social media hurts less over time, but those first few “hate” comments really sting.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love colorful vintage fashion! I’m a pretty shy person, so I rely on my outfits to make a statement and speak for me. I typically gravitate toward what people would call “rainbowcore” or “dopamine dressing”. The more color, the more layers, the more prints, the better! I am also a plus size woman, so I do my best to let other plus size people know that they can and SHOULD wear what they want.

What makes you happy?
It’s hard to explain, but nothing makes me happier than a unique vintage article of clothing. Vintage clothes were made a lot differently than clothes today. They were made with higher quality textiles, constructed better etc. I just love finding a super unique, well-made vintage piece that’s nothing like what you could find from a clothing company today. Vintage clothing was so much fancier, it comes with a story. Little details like beading, sequins, a vintage dress that buttons up the back. Small things like that make me smile. It’s like a window to a different time and I think that’s special.
