Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Tarasevich.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hello there! Back in 2010 I’d been working in corporate party bands as a vocalist for two decades when it became clear that there was a need for an organized, professional cirque entertainment company in Utah. Circus arts and local aerial studios were beginning to boom and many of my event contacts would call when they were looking for unusual performers: aerialists, fire dancers, specialty acts—after passing along contact info again and again, I realized that it was time to officially delve into talent management and bring the circus to town in a big way. Now our company has expanded nationwide, traveling to out-of-state events, with collaborators in Denver, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York City, and Miami. From roving performers to full scale cirque shows, we love that Voodoo we do, and live to provide unusual event entertainment.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road less traveled is never smooth, but I had no expectation that starting an entertainment company would be streamlined from the start. Every single event, every custom design, every talent request, comes with a new challenge. That’s what makes it interesting!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been singing for my supper (literally) my entire life and feel fortunate that performing in corporate party bands has carved a path for me to travel, to create, and to keep doing what I love year-after-year. If it wasn’t for my own performance background, I don’t think I would have stepped out on a limb to start Voodoo Productions. It brings me such joy to provide lucrative performance opportunities for the talented humans I work with—I am endlessly inspired by the level of talent, professionalism, and the wide variety of performers we have, right here in Utah. I’ve always gravitated towards unexpected and unique entertainment—my favorite thing is to create something entirely new, to debut it for the first time, or to put our own Voodoo spin on something when a client makes a standard request. Doing something different (and doing it well), along with giving performers the platform they need to shine…this continues to drive me.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Connection is key. My business wouldn’t have left my living room without the many collaborations I’ve made with other performers and friends in the event industry. That being said, I try to keep a few tricks up my sleeve and don’t give away all my trade secrets. Some of the fun is that people never know what we are going to do next.
