Check Out Dr. Juliet Dang’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Juliet Dang.

Hi Dr. Dang, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB, Canada. Moved to Seattle in 2008. I have four degrees – Bachelor of Science in Biology/Chemistry, Dental Hygiene, Master of Oral Biology, Ph.D. in Oral Biology. My formal education is very scientific yet I also utilize the creative side of my brain. In 2016, I began creating art and my main medium is fluid acrylics. I branched out into producing my own fashion line called House of Juju and showcased my designs on the runway. Modeling and acting professionally is also something I do on the side.

My most recent project is the production of my magazine Vietology. The focus of the first issue is to highlight Vietnamese women and Vietnamese visual artists.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Everything takes time and resources. Creating a solid network with people you can rely on is key to producing successful work. You cannot do it all on your own. Support is everything whether that be monetary, time, energy, etc.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have a ton of projects swirling in my head. For my paintings, it took me a good year to get my technique and recipe down so that I could set myself apart from the other fluid media artists. It is true that anyone can do it but not everyone can do it right. Producing pieces that actually have composition and being able to have the colors really pop out is essential. If it is done wrong it can look like a pile of mud really quick. You have to be fearless and be ready to have pieces that “fail” and even the ones you don’t like, someone else will!

For my magazine, I had a very clear vision of what I wanted the product to be like. I created my small team of 4, which includes myself, and it took at least 1.5 years to complete the magazine fully. The publication is very unique as there is nothing like it. Vietnamese women and artists aren’t celebrated often and with my team, we created a platform to do so.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I feel in general you are in control of your own fate and successes. You choose the amount of time and energy spent in your endeavors and projects. Confidence in yourself is also key. I am also a fearless person, thus am liberated from the mental blocks. All of these items don’t have to do with luck, however, I do feel lucky to have the ability to be creative and produce impactful work. It’s great to be lucky but it’s also great to be in control of your actions. Accountability and self-awareness play major roles in your development.
