Today we’d like to introduce you to Kawika Miles Black.
Hi Kawika, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Born and raised in Utah, I don’t feel like my life really began until high school ended–that’s when I started to discover who I am. In both religious and military capacities I was able to see other parts of the country and the world. As a writer, my job is to relate to humanity and tell stories accordingly–stories to bring people closer together, and these experiences compounds that effort. My first book took 10 years to get right (and even then I don’t feel it’s perfect), but it’s not about being perfect I’ve learned. It’s about getting up and doing. Dropping out of college and joining the Army, I learned first hand what it’s like to put your boots on the ground and get to work, and all the experience I’ve gained in my professional career has allowed me to write better.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! Life, if done right, should never be a smooth road. Trial and error, rinsed and repeated over and over. One quote I absolutely love is that “if your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.” I intentionally went down the independent author/publisher route because I wanted to have say in how my story was told to the world. That being said, I knew exactly the trials I had ahead of me. I don’t have the resources of a book box publishing company, and as such I have had to source my own editor, design my own cover and book layout, run my own marketing campaigns, find distributors, build and design my own website, and more. It’s a long road, but one that I willingly and gladly took, and working on two other novels, I cannot wait to share these as well with the world.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At the moment, I am a dystopian-fiction author. Having served in the military and born in the greatest country on Earth, I am also a proud American. Unfortunately in the media and creative outlets, it’s more popular to hate on America than count yourself blessed to live here, and as such, ideologies have shaped a culture that is becoming a modern-dystopia right before our eyes. What sets me apart from other authors? I’m establishing an author brand around fighting for America, my dystopian stories being just one part of that.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My wife absolutely has been my biggest supporter. She’s told me on many occasions that one thing that attracted me to her was my ability to dream, and not once has she tried to squander my hope for the future. If anything, she has fueled it.
