Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Spurlock.
Hi Kayla, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started writing music when I was eight years old, but it took me almost 30 years after that to be brave enough to release anything.
My grandparents were both phenomenal bluegrass musicians, and that was a catalyst for me to take piano lessons when I was nine years old. I went to university to major in music education at the undergraduate and graduate levels at Eastern Kentucky and BYU, respectively.
I primarily write in the CCM music genre, and I’ve won awards in the Church Music Submission, the BYU Women’s Conference, and been featured as a songwriter on the editorial playlists of Apple on Spotify.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think anyone’s road is smooth, and there are still many destinations that I would like to arrive at. Thus far in life, I’ve admired how I’ve risen above an inferiority complex in regards to songwriting and been more bold and brave to share what I’ve written with the world.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a public school music educator by day (choir and general music), and a CCM songwriter by night.
I am most proud of making the Gospel Worship, African Worship, and New Christian and New Gospel official editorial playlists on Apple Music and Spotify.
I am set apart from others because I work as a music educator in addition to being an artist and songwriter. I love showing my students that their teacher teaches music, but also works professionally in music making.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Parents – They paid for piano lessons:)
Producers – Daniel Blomberg, Dave Zimmerman, Kory Caudill, Becky Willard – they took my songs and help them live within DAWs in more interesting, radio-friendly, streaming ways
Videographers – Josh Sales, Bailey Zimmerman, Nicholas James, Brayden Merrill – they helped my songs live visually with music videos
Many friends from Millennial Choirs and Orchestras and The Fold Worship Choir offered their vocal talents as background singers on all of my projects.
