Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Gordon
Hi Kim, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been making art since I was a child, but I started becoming interested in watercolor during high school and have painted consistently since. I attended Snow College on an art scholarship and graduated with an Associate of Arts and then continued my education at Utah State University achieving a Bachelors Degree in Art Education with a focus in drawing. I’ve taught at the high school and middle school levels, but for the last 24 years I’ve been an adjunct professor at Snow College teaching mainly drawing and 2D design classes and occasionally teaching community workshops through the local art center. While teaching is a large part of my life, painting and creating my own art is my priority. I paint regularly with a plein air group I helped found in Sanpete County as well as in my studio at home. Painting life in Sanpete County and its history is very inspiring to me, as well as recording places I’ve traveled.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Anyone who creates art will tell you the road is very rarely smooth. Being an educator has helped support my art habit when selling paintings doesn’t keep me afloat financially. I don’t paint to make money, however. I paint because I love it. It brings me peace and joy.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am mainly a watercolor painter, but I also work occasionally in drawing, oil and acrylic, printmaking, and bookmaking. One of the things that has moved my skills as a watercolor artist ahead is painting outside on location also called plein air painting. It has taught me to simplify and organize subject matter as well as mixing colors accurately. Teaching has also taught me that practicing regularly is extremely important in strengthening my abilities.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I am willing to teach workshops and I always have paintings available to buy.
