Check Out Misty Tucson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Misty Tucson.

Hi Misty , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Durango, Colorado, and raised in the small but spirited town of Bayfield. After high school, I moved to Phoenix, Arizona, chasing big dreams and a fresh start. There, I attended beauty school and began carving out a future for myself. In 2007, I became a mother to my daughter, Grace a moment that grounded me and gave me even more reason to dream big.

As a Hispanic woman, becoming a business owner once felt like a far-off dream. But with the love and support of my community, clients, and friends, I began to believe I could do more. I stopped waiting and I took a leap of faith.

What makes Urban Grace even more special is the women who help bring it to life:

Terri Fellows, a fierce and passionate stylist from the East Coast, trained with some of the best in the industry and brings bold New York energy to our team.
Rose Vigil, born in Durango and proud of her Native heritage, honors tradition and culture through her deep love of hair and community.
Andrea Dunsire, originally from Seattle, brings a deep love for Colorado and a sense of legacy—her family roots trace back to the founding of Seattle’s iconic fish market.
Together, we represent more than a team we represent culture, perseverance, and pride in where we come from.

My approach to hair is all about enhancing natural beauty—creating easy, lived-in color and styles that work for real life. Urban Grace Studio isn’t just a salon. It’s a place where confidence grows, creativity is nurtured, and women—especially working mothers—are empowered to reach their full potential.

Through loss, risk, and resilience, I’ve learned that trusting yourself is powerful. When we lead with heart and surround ourselves with community, we build something lasting not just for ourselves, but for everyone around us.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At the time, I was also exploring a career in real estate. I had just closed my biggest deal when the 2008 housing crash hit. I tried to ride out the storm, but life had other plans. Thinking of Grace and her future, I made the hard but right decision to return home back to a tight-knit community where family support meant everything.

Life has brought its share of heartbreak. In 2017, I lost my cousin who was only 17 years old. Her passing reminded me just how short and precious life really is. She taught me to live in the moment, to show up for the people we love, and to never let fear stop us from chasing what truly matters. Sometimes, taking a risk and believing in yourself is the boldest move you can make.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
After 17 years behind the chair, I opened Urban Grace Studio in January 2020. My goal was to bring a modern, timeless, and welcoming space to our mountain town something fresh and urban, yet rooted in the values of connection and creativity. The studio is named after my daughter, Grace, who continues to inspire me every day.

I’ve always wanted my clients to feel seen, heard, and valued not just as customers, but as people with stories, dreams, and lives that matter. Creating that kind of experience is at the heart of everything I do.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I think being a woman and putting so much pressure on myself to do it all run a business, be a mother , wife/partner , daughter and friend, It took me a long time the realize I don’t want to to do it all. And its ok to be tired and not have in to work an insane schedule or push myself to the next level. That sitting back and being proud and enjoying the journey of my life is the best part. Now I have given myself permission to rest and that I don’t have to be this unrealistic version of myself. I want my daughter to see that everything I built wasn’t all about sacrifice and working hard. But I enjoyed the ride and loved my life even when it was hard. And as women it’s ok to just be and that is enough. I wish more women could give themselves permission to rest and just BE. It’s not always about the outcome but truly the moments that make ourselves and now I no longer miss it anymore. Im more present than I have even been especially as a mother. That just being me in enough without all the labels.
