Today we’d like to introduce you to Randy Slaugh.
Hi Randy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I got my start in music production back in Philadelphia where I grew up playing in local bands and recording the projects I was involved in. My first professional music credit was helping record some strings for Periphery’s song “Have a Blast” back in 2012, which led to more and more work with artists like Devin Townsend, Architects, TesseracT, and David Archuleta.
In 2017, I linked up with a couple of other producers and started getting music I’d composed licensed on TV, film, and advertising. I’ve since had over 300 TV placements on shows like 90 Day Fiance, Catfish, and Project Runway as well ad campaigns for brands like Bombas, Younique, and the NBA.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When anyone asks me how to “make it” in the music industry, I always joke that music is a “get rich slow scheme.” It’s taken a lot of years to build into something that sustainably pays the bills full-time, and along that road, there have been both a lot of wins as well as a lot of setbacks and learning experiences.
I just recently had a project I worked on for a client on Atlantic Records where the songs I did production on were cut from the album, and you have to learn to roll with the punches in situations like that. I’ve learned to not put all my eggs in one basket and instead to have my hand in a lot of pots so that if one project falls through, I’ve got a number of other things going.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
A lot of people know me through my work with bands like Periphery and Architects, but I work on a lot of different projects ranging from composing music for visual media (everything from commercials to short films to TV shows and video games) to working with artists both in-person and remotely and helping bring their songs to life.
I have a background in piano and guitar and have been working on perfecting my craft at both organic and electronic production over the past decade – everything from orchestral music to hip-hop, pop, metal, industrial, country, and everything in between.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Honestly, as far as networking goes, the best advice I could give is to make sure you’re top of mind for the people who want the services you provide. Put yourself out there, add value first, make genuine connections and be a part of the ecosystem. Do really good work and be someone people enjoy working with.
