Check Out Ricardo Quintana

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricardo Quintana.

Hi Ricardo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m from Santiago-Chile, I came to Utah to study film at BYU and along the way, I fell in love with photography. My cousin, who lives in Utah, was getting married and asked me to take his engagements with this little pocket canon camera, by then, I had no idea what engagements were. In Chile wedding photography used to have a bad reputation although I realized that this vision was very narrow-minded. Later, he bought a semi-professional camera and once again asked me to do bridals and part of the wedding.

The rest is kind of history, loved the experience, I started doing portrait photography with friends with my cousin’s camera and later I decided to get my own gear and get more serious about it. I graduated with Media Arts studies from BYU but, I decided to pursue full-time photography instead back in 2016. I’ve been very fortunate to work in many states in the USA and in other countries. I love working with people from all backgrounds and capturing their own family history.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Even though I studied film I’m pretty much self-taught in many areas of photography. The path to building my own business has been a fun, rocky ride. There are many things I could describe overcoming challenges in photography, one is to find your own voice in photography, knowing your style and signature.

That will be the artistic side. The second is to find your managerial voice, how you want to go around your business, I believe because I was so into the artistic side that it has taken me a lot longer to build a profitable business that protects the consumer, my precious clients, and that also protects myself.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
It took me a second to recognize my usual clientele, at the beginning, I would just work with whoever was interested in my work. However, over these past years, my own clients have pointed out how inclusive and diverse my clients are being in the state of Utah. I’ve done plenty of multicultural weddings in and out of Utah. I love photographing traditional outfits, different skin colors, and traditions. I see so much beauty in people caring for and celebrating their own legacy. I’m a firm believer in the power of representation.
