Today we’d like to introduce you to Tayler Muir
Tayler, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From a young age, school was my world. I excelled in it, and more than that, I genuinely loved it. My mind thrives when I’m learning—when I can figure out how something works and why. So, it might seem surprising to some, including myself, that I didn’t immediately head off to college after high school. Instead, I took a different path. I started by studying dental assisting and worked in the field for a while, but it wasn’t long before I realized I was drawn to something else: the service industry.
I explored several paths—hair, nails, lashes, brows—but I wasn’t sure what the final destination would be. What I did know was that I wanted it. I had no idea how I would juggle running a business with a busy schedule, but my determination was unwavering. Then, one day, I had a conversation with my lash tech. I shared my dreams with her, and she suggested I look into microblading. It was an intriguing idea, and before I knew it, I was saving every penny to take a brow class.
The moment I started training, I felt like I had found my true calling. My brow trainer introduced me to the world of tiny tattoos—something I had never really considered before. As a 17-18-year-old with just one tattoo, the idea piqued my interest. She mentioned someone who was teaching tattooing, and something in my gut told me I had to do it. So, I dove in, saving up for tattoo training while building my brow business. The drive to become an amazing tattoo artist was there—but little did I know, I was in for a wild ride.
I had no understanding of tattoo culture, no idea what it would take, and, coming from an LDS background, tattoos weren’t something I’d been exposed to or educated on. Still, I pressed forward, diving into my tiny tattoo training, which came with its own set of challenges. There were many bumps along the way, and I had to figure things out on my own. Looking back at those early tattoos can be humbling, but I didn’t give up. I put in the work, the grit, and eventually became skilled at the tiny tattoos I had once dreamed of.
Meanwhile, I was also navigating the complexities of running a business—working full time as a dental assistant and dedicating my evenings to building my new career. Life got even busier when I had my baby, who is truly my greatest blessing. Now, I was balancing full-time work, a business, and motherhood. Somewhere along the way, I even found time to attend nail school!
The years 2023 and 2024 marked a major shift for me. I took the leap to tattoo full-time, which became my sole income, and I was thriving. I joined a tattoo shop for the first time, working alongside other artists, and I was on cloud nine. I learned so much—not just about tattooing, but about myself, my craft, and the diverse people I encountered. It was an incredible experience, one I’ll never forget, even though it came to an unexpected and bittersweet end.
In May 2025, I opened my own tattoo shop with some incredible colleagues. It’s called Meraki Tattoo Studio. We should have called it “Just Tattoo” because that’s all we wanted to do—tattoo. It was a space where we could create, share our passion, and grow together. Alongside this, I’ve continued to do nails and even dipped my toes into wedding photography. I’ve always been a busy bee, and while slowing down can be challenging, it’s worth it to be able to savor the life I’ve built for myself and my little one.
It’s been quite the journey—one full of surprises, hard lessons, and rewarding experiences. But through it all, I’ve built my dream life and one that I am proud of.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The challenges never stop. In many ways, the job itself is the greatest challenge of all—constantly pushing yourself to improve with every tattoo. For me, being a tattoo artist means always remaining a student of the craft, continually learning and refining my skills. The journey of growth never ends.
Balancing the artistic side with the business side can also be tough. Knowing your worth while setting clear boundaries and policies is essential for sustainability. It’s not just about creating art; it’s about ensuring that the business side of things runs smoothly and respectfully.
Tattooing is a job that never truly ends. There’s always something to do—whether it’s designing, tattooing, responding to clients, or marketing myself on social media. The hours can be long and demanding, but every bit of it is worth it. When you’re passionate about what you do, the work never feels like a burden.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a tattoo artist specializing in fine line work, though I’m still exploring where my true passion lies in terms of style. I’ve dabbled in micro-realism, surrealism, and florals, and I’m starting to envision combining these elements into a unique style that could become my signature. For now, I’m letting my creativity guide me, taking each tattoo as it comes, and designing based on what inspires me in the moment.
That said, I’ll always hold a special place in my heart for the dainty, tiny tattoos that I began with. There’s something timeless about a crisp, clean script, and it’s a style I’ll never turn down. It’s part of my journey, and I’m grateful for how it’s shaped my artistic path.
What sets me apart is my background in the service industry and the diverse skills I’ve developed along the way. Before becoming a tattoo artist, I worked in other fields, including microblading and dental assisting, which gave me a unique perspective on precision, artistry, and customer care. I’ve always approached my work with a drive to get better with each tattoo i did, and I’m committed to continuous learning. I’m never satisfied with “good enough” – I’m always striving to be better, refining my craft with each tattoo.
What I’m most proud of is the ability to balance my artistic passion with running a successful business. I’ve built my career from the ground up while also embracing my role as a mother. It’s been a tough journey at times, but seeing how far I’ve come – both professionally and personally – is a constant reminder of what determination and hard work can accomplish. The people I meet and the relationships I’ve formed with my clients are another source of pride. I truly believe in creating a space where people feel seen and valued, not just as clients, but as individuals with unique stories to tell.
What truly sets me apart is my commitment to continuous growth and the genuine care I put into every aspect of my work. I’m not just an artist—I’m a lifelong student of my craft, always striving to improve and stay true to my passion for creating meaningful, beautiful tattoos.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe the most important quality to my success has been my determination and commitment to continuous growth. Whether it’s mastering a new tattoo technique, expanding my business, or navigating the challenges of motherhood, I’ve always pushed myself to keep moving forward, even when things get tough. I’m also incredibly adaptable, which has allowed me to embrace different styles, balance multiple roles, and evolve as an artist and business owner. Most importantly, I remain a lifelong student of my craft—constantly learning, refining, and seeking ways to improve. This mindset has not only shaped my success but has helped me stay passionate and focused on what I love to do.
