Today we’d like to introduce you to Zak Davis
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The night I knew I wanted to pursue music was when I was 15. My mom took me to my first rock concert to see Oingo Boingo. Watching Danny Elfman and his bandmates captivate the crowd, I thought, “That’s what I want to do. I want to create this magic for others.”
On our way home, I told my mom what I wanted to be when I grew up. She glanced at me, smiled, and said, “Well… good luck.” That’s where it all started.
Over the past three decades, I’ve been in several bands, writing and performing music. From my first synth-pop band Deap Blue to ska bands Catfische and Hoo Ray Who? After a long hiatus, I rebooted a project called Z Frequency in early 2024, releasing a new single each month up to October. The singles will be part of an album set to release in 2025.
I also created The ZHZ Podcast, a space for DIY artists and all things music, with my close friend and bandmate Matt Allen. We do guest interviews and talk about life as musicians and independent artists.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It wasn’t exactly a struggle, nor was it smooth. Life constantly throws obstacles, but it’s determination that keeps you moving. You have to ask yourself how badly you want it and what you’re willing to do to get there. That’s where you’ll find the time and will to manifest your passion.

I’m the singer/songwriter for the alt ska rock reggae band Z Frequency. I also host the ZHZ Podcast, where we feature aspiring musicians and guest interviews with upcoming DIY artists.
