Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Finlinson.
Hi Andrew, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Sports have always been a huge part of my life. I remember waking up excited to grab the newspaper in the mornings just to read all the stats and recaps from the previous day’s games. I have played tennis, baseball, basketball, and ran track, but I have always loved watching football, gymnastics, and nearly every sport you can think of.
Inevitably, playing sports meant dealing with injuries, and that is how I first encountered physical therapy. From those early experiences, an interest was sparked that stayed with me through high school and college. While at Southern Utah University, I worked as a physical therapy aide, and I loved it. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone progress and feeling like you played a role in their journey.
That passion led me to pursue my doctorate in physical therapy at Rocky Mountain University in Provo, Utah. There, I discovered the depth of what a physical therapist can do, not just in rehab, but in helping people optimize their health, movement, and performance.
After graduating in December 2022, I started my career at Wright Physical Therapy in Boise, Idaho. I worked with patients of all ages, from young kids to 98-year-olds, and learned so much. But over time, I realized I was most drawn to working with athletes. To me, an athlete is not defined by competition. They are anyone who wants to stay active and healthy, someone who wants to move their body, enjoy their hobbies, and push themselves. That could be a 10-year-old soccer player, a 40-year-old training for their first half marathon, or a 70-year-old golfer.
I understand this drive because being active is part of who I am. Losing that ability, or seeing someone lose that ability, is devastating. Helping people maintain their identity through movement became my mission.
Within months of starting my career, I had a persistent thought. I wanted to start my own clinic. I did not know when or how, but I knew why. I wanted to create a place where everyday athletes could get the care they needed for training, recovery, and injury rehab without the restrictions of the traditional insurance model.
To better serve this goal, I became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Learning how to properly train, fuel, and recover helped me complement my expertise in injury rehab and performance. Around that time, my wife and I moved back to Utah. She started as an occupational therapist in the Nebo School District, and I finally felt ready to start my own practice. That is how FIN Treatment & Training was born.
At FIN, I set out to build something different. One-on-one care is central to my approach. In traditional clinics, I often felt pressured to treat patients based on insurance requirements rather than what they truly needed. I would sometimes have to discharge patients after only a few visits, even after major surgeries like ACL reconstructions or total knee replacements. Seeing multiple patients per hour meant I could only spend 15 to 20 minutes with each person before sending them off with exercises. That just was not enough. I wanted to give every patient the attention, expertise, and individualized care they deserved.
Today, FIN Treatment & Training offers personalized physical therapy for everyday athletes, people who want to stay active, recover from injury, and perform at their best. It is early, but I have already seen incredible results: clients running their first marathons without pain, returning to sports after surgery, and finally moving without pain after years of struggle.
Starting my own clinic has been the realization of a dream, but it is more than that. It is a place where people can reclaim their confidence, their strength, and their joy in movement, and that is what motivates me every day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Has it been a smooth road? Not exactly. I like to think of it like a road leading up to a ski resort. You are always climbing uphill, and there are plenty of twists and turns, sometimes more than you expect, but you know that if you keep pushing, something great is waiting at the top.
There have definitely been challenges. For one, I was trained to be a physical therapist, not to start or run a business. The past few months have involved a lot of trial and error as I figure out what works, and I know there is still more to learn.
Another challenge has been establishing a reputation in a new area. My wife and I are not from Springville, so we do not have any name recognition or built-in referral networks. A lot of the early work has been about connecting with local businesses, organizations, and other professionals to build what I like to think of as a “dream team” of referral partners. That takes time, but it is starting to come together.
Finances are a natural challenge as well. Between my student loans from physical therapy school and my wife’s occupational therapy loans, money can be tight. Balancing what to invest in the business versus other priorities has been a constant consideration. Fortunately, I have an incredible wife who has been a huge source of support and encouragement, helping me keep moving forward even when things get tough.
Even with the struggles, every challenge has been an opportunity to grow, and every step forward makes the journey worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
FIN Treatment & Training is a physical therapy and performance training practice designed for everyday athletes, anyone who wants to stay active, recover from injury, and perform at their best. We specialize in one-on-one care that is fully individualized. Every program is tailored to the person, their goals, and their lifestyle, rather than being dictated by insurance rules or cookie-cutter protocols.
Our services include physical therapy, sport performance training to improve performance and prevent injuries, and recovery services such as dry needling, cupping, IASTM (scraping), soft tissue mobilization, and stretching. We also provide prescriptive exercise plans for rehab or prehab that can be done at home, giving people flexibility to work on their recovery or performance on their own schedule. Many athletes and active individuals come in weekly for recovery services and follow customized exercise plans to improve mobility, strength, and performance, helping them stay at the top of their game.
What sets us apart is our approach. Patients are not rushed through appointments or limited by insurance visit caps. By combining expertise in injury rehab with strength and conditioning knowledge, we help people recover from injuries, improve movement, and enhance long-term performance and health. We work with a wide range of people, from kids in sports to adults training for races, to older adults looking to stay active and healthy.
I am most proud of creating a practice where patients truly feel heard, supported, and empowered to reach their goals. Early results have been incredibly rewarding, with clients running their first marathons, returning to sports after surgery, or finally moving without pain after years of struggle.
What I want readers to know is that FIN Treatment & Training is a place where movement, performance, and recovery are prioritized. Care is personal, focused, and flexible, and every athlete, no matter their age or ability, can get the help they need to stay active, healthy, and stronger than before.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is a mixture of people, experiences, and activities. My wife, Mel, is at the center of that. Her support and partnership mean everything. My faith also guides me and gives me perspective in all aspects of life. I love being outdoors and connecting with nature, whether it is paddleboarding, skiing, or just spending time outside. I enjoy playing almost any sport and watching sports, especially the Utah Jazz and college football. Humor and laughter are essential for me. I am often joking, teasing, or quoting movies and TV shows. I also love visiting warm places and taking the opportunity to relax and recharge in new environments.
