Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Prebble.
Hi Annie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I intentionally went to esthetics school to become a body waxer in 2016. However, after doing my first facial in school, I fell in love with the treatment. A month and a half after graduating, I opened up my own little studio in Midvale. I had zero clientele, but had so much hope and confidence in myself, I knew it was an opportunity my past self would have been proud of taking. This July will be eight years of running a business and being fully self employed. Initially, I dedicated my practice to corrective skincare, and over time, fell in love with the aspect of caring for and providing a space for all humans to receive self care, community, and safety. I cater my craft towards the Queer and Trans community, as I am one of a few Trans estheticians in Utah. My clients have been my greatest supporters through this entire journey, from me getting COVID January of 2020 and almost dying, the pandemic shutting down business for three months, caring for a spouse after a motorcycle accident, an ended marriage, soulmate dog passing away, to moving out of my home of 10 years next month – my clients have shown up for me in ways I didn’t think imaginable.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Probably one of the bumpiest roads I’ve ridden, and that’s saying a lot coming from Utah and all of its pot holes! Haha!
There were many times that I thought to myself, “Is this even worth it?” Time and time again, my clients prove to me that it IS worth it!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Annie’s Esthetics?
I offer Customized Facials that always comes with a massage of some sorts; scalp, arm + hand, & neck + shoulder. I also offer energy work through Reiki and Brow waxing. I am known for providing a safe space in the beauty industry. A lot of industry folks claim to be a “safe space” but, unfortunately, do not take the necessary steps to be a safe space. This includes using your clients correct pronouns, telling your clients your own pronouns, respecting a trans clients transition journey by not asking inappropriate questions, not gendering skincare treatments (some will charge more for men simply because testosterone produces more oil to the skin), being aware of harmful beauty practices that are rooted in racism, staying up to date on politics and which of your clients rights are being taken away.
It is crucial for me, especially as a Trans person, to provide a space for fellow trans folks to feel comfortable. My way of giving back has been running treatment specials for the trans community. I want self care, pampering, and space holding to be accessible for everyone! Even many of my regulars offer to cover the costs for those folks – it is very emotional and beautiful, we all end up sobbing and holding each other. I have never been prouder of the work that I do and provide.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Wow! I love this question! My step dad would buy large bags of ladybugs in the spring and would release them in our gardens. They would fly and crawl everywhere on us. So much joy in such a simple act.
