Today we’d like to introduce you to Arlene Carroll.
Hi Arlene, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
About 8 years ago, my daughter, Christina, gifted me a paint night with her for my birthday. I was a single mom and we developed a very close relationship as she grew up and she is now raising her own children.
While I had considered myself pretty good at crafts, I had never tried painting and, like most people, though I would be terrible at it. I searched through the options, found the easiest one possible, and was surprised at how much I loved it! I was hooked and attended as many paint nights as I could fit into my schedule.
When the opportunity arose to purchase a paint night business, I jumped on the chance, and my daughter and I purchased the business in 2021. I had been retired for 9 years at that point, but the opportunity to invest in something so fun for me to do with my daughter was something I just could not pass up.
We continue to learn new things about running this business and have managed to double our business over the past year. This has become a passion of mine and I’m looking forward to many, many more years of serving our community with a fun and social way to express themselves.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Fortunately, the previous owner of Buzzed Arts was running it quite successfully when we purchased the business so taking over was fairly smooth.
Of course, actually getting up in front of a room of people to teach them how to paint was a bit nerve-wracking. I had to develop my own style and was able to get all the bugs worked out after a couple of months of teaching. Advertising has not been quite so easy to learn.
While my daughter was familiar with using social media to market a business, I definitely was not! I am learning to navigate Instagram more over time and my granddaughter, Amy, has just begun teaching me about TikTok so we can incorporate it into our advertising as well.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Buzzed Arts provides painting instruction to groups in either a public or private setting while providing a fun and encouraging environment in which our clients are free to express themselves through painting. We are always creating new paintings that, with an instructor’s help, beginners can successfully complete. More advanced painters can embellish the painting or paint whatever else they wish.
We provide everything needed to complete a painting as well as perform all setup and cleanup so the painters can just show up and have fun. This is especially important for a private event at a client’s home in order for the host to enjoy their time with their guests. We also love to create custom paintings for our private event clients, which allows them to choose something they are especially interested in paint.
It has been important for us since the beginning to make this an affordable event to attend, so we charge a modest fee for our services. We know there are other providers in town who charge nearly double what we do for similar services, but we believe we can provide a fun and affordable event, which encourages our painters to become repeat customers.
We are proud that this has been our largest area of growth over the past year.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me?
Making a difference in the lives of people in my community. I enjoy encouraging people to step out of their comfort zone and try something new and love to see the look on their faces when they accomplish something they didn’t know they could do.
My favorite thing about teaching painting to groups is to see all of the beautiful variations in the completed paintings. There are no two paintings that are identical and that is as it should be.
