Community Highlights: Meet Bethany Tracy of Wasatch Canine Camp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Tracy.

Hi Bethany, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up a pet lover, with a variety of different animals throughout my young life. I always knew I wanted to do something with animals. It was when I got my first dog of my very own at the age of 14 that I realized I wanted to be a dog trainer. My German Shepherd, Jake, was a very intelligent dog who loved to learn. I taught him dozens of tricks, practiced obedience exercises daily, and even dabbled in agility and disc games with him. He was a blast to learn with. As he grew he developed some severe dog and human aggression that as a teenager I was not able to work through. This started my journey to wanting even more to work towards certifications to become a dog trainer who can help work with difficult and aggressive dogs, not only to help Jake work through his issues but other dogs as well. In summer of 2007 at the age of 18 I completed my first certification of many to start my dog training journey. That same year I opened Wasatch Canine Camp. I never dreamed that my little dog training company that I started when I was 18 would grow into a very large facility offering not only training, but boarding and daycare services, along with many staff to help keep it running smooth. My husband, Alan, is also a very valuable partner to have throughout this journey. I couldn’t have gotten to where I am today without him and his amazing support.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. In the very early years of Wasatch Canine Camp, my husband (who at the time was my fiance) was diagnosed with cancer for the second time. It was a long battle of him being in the hospital for months at a time, not knowing if he would make it or not, all while trying to juggle clients and getting my business name out there. It was a stressful year that could have definitely caused the downfall of my company continuing to grow. Luckily I was able to push through supporting him and his care, which was top priority, while focusing on my clients and my company. This year marks 17 years of remission for him, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

After that massive bump in the road, the other challenges that popped for us didn’t compare and were easy obstacles to tackle. Small challenges over the years have included slow times due to the economy, trying to run things during COVID, working with cities and their permits/codes, etc. The biggest challenge we had to face was finding a permanent place to call Wasatch Canine Camp home. For the first 9 years we ran everything out of our home and traveled to the homes of our clients. We offered small boarding numbers and board and train slots due to space in the house and of course due to city regulations on numbers of dogs we could have in our home. It got to a point where we really just couldn’t continue to run things out of our house anymore. It took us several years of searching for the right place for our facility before we finally found our current location in Orem where we have been for 10 years now. It may not stay our forever home for our company, but for now it is exactly what we need.

As you know, we’re big fans of Wasatch Canine Camp. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We specialize in just about everything when it comes to dog training and dog behavior. We can work with mild to severe aggressive dogs, puppies, dogs with bad manners, potty training issues, overly hyper dogs, mild to severe nervous dogs, and so much more. We’ve seen just about anything and everything, with almost two decades of experience and knowledge! We strongly focus on training from a holistic approach. When we are working with clients we don’t only focus on obedience and/or behavior, we also strongly focus on nutrition, state of mind, physical development and structure (as aches and pains are a huge part of most behaviors problems), and socialization. We want to set all dogs up for success in all aspects of life! Our training is not “one size fits all”, we work hard to find what works best for the client and their dog. We also focus heavily on creating a positive, fun relationship with the client and their dog. By giving our clients the right knowledge and skills to properly communicate with them, they can have a happy, healthy relationship with their furry friend, no matter their behaviors!

We constantly correspond with and have learned from the best trainers in the nation. We are constantly attending new dog training and dog behavior seminars, working with new dog trainers to help provide our clients with the best and most up to date training methods and information. We pride ourselves in being one of the few dog training facilities in Utah that have the extensive knowledge base that we have, and are confident that our clients and their dogs will learn more than they would have ever thought they could learn while training their dog! Our experience gives our clients the confidence they need to get their canine companion under control so that they can get their life back.

We also offer safe, structured, supervised and fun daycare and boarding services that focus heavily on pack socialization.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Spread the word any way you can! Tell your friends, family, neighbors, etc about us and what we offer. Telling your vet or groomer about us is also helpful in spreading the word! Word of mouth is so helpful for us. You can also tag us on social media (Facebook, Instagram) or share posts of ours.
