Community Highlights: Meet Brent Holmes of Henry’s Pet Grooming

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brent Holmes.

Hi Brent, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my career in software sales right out of college, where I found a natural fit and enjoyed a successful run for over a decade. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, I always knew I wanted to start my own business someday. After spending some time exploring different industries and business ideas, I realized that my passion for pets was something I wanted to turn into a career.

Late last year, after careful research and planning, I decided to dive into the mobile pet grooming industry. It felt like the perfect blend of my love for animals and my entrepreneurial drive. Since then, I’ve poured my energy into growing Henry’s Pet Grooming into a premium, customer-focused service. It’s been an incredibly rewarding journey, and I’m excited about what the future holds.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. From the outset, timelines were consistently pushed back, and I encountered numerous learning opportunities within the first 90 to 120 days. The initial hurdles ranged from navigating the legal processes of starting a business, designing a functional website, and implementing effective scheduling software, to the logistical challenges of acquiring, outfitting, transporting, and storing the grooming van.

The challenges didn’t stop there. Unforeseen weather conditions caused frozen pipes and tanks during an exceptionally cold February, which disrupted operations significantly. On top of that, staffing issues added another layer of complexity. Despite these numerous obstacles, from the outside, it may have appeared that everything went off without a hitch, but behind the scenes, it was a rigorous test of resilience and adaptability

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Henry’s Pet Grooming?
I run Henry’s Mobile Pet Grooming, and we specialize in premium, luxury, and convenient mobile pet grooming. We’re probably best known for our bright blue van that catches a lot of attention. What sets us apart is that I feel like I’ve brought in a real, clean-looking brand experience to what is already an in-demand market. Historically, in my opinion, the market hasn’t been run by many creative professionals with strong marketing and branding behind it. There are a lot of mom-and-pop shops or individuals who might purchase their own van without ambitions to grow it into a large organization like my intentions are.

I’m most proud of the van and brand design that I created with the help of my brother-in-law, which is definitely our signature look. We’ve applied that branding to our marketing materials, our website, our grooming smocks, etc. The cyan blue color we landed on stands out—it’s clean, beautiful, and elegant, perfectly reflecting the premium service we provide. The name, Henry’s, comes from my almost 11 year old Golden Retriever, Henry.

I want people to know that we spend a ton of time figuring out how to provide the most value for every dollar our customers spend. This includes personalized consultations, using premium shampoos and products, and ensuring every detail of the grooming experience is top-notch. We even send our clients home with a Polaroid of their dog and will soon offer Henry-branded dog biscuits. We provide grooming reports and never cut corners. Our goal is to be so good that it’s a no-brainer for someone to use us again. We focus on customer experience and obsession, ensuring there’s never a reason for them to go anywhere else.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My reading preferences lean heavily towards non-fiction, particularly in the realms of self-improvement and business. I’ve always felt that if I’m going to invest time and energy into reading, it should be something I can apply almost immediately and see a return on that investment. I haven’t ventured much into niche or lesser-known books; most of what I’ve read are the popular titles you’d expect in these genres.

When it comes to podcasts, I enjoy those that are either highly motivational or educational. One of my favorites is ‘Stuff You Should Know.’ My brain has always been a sponge for information, and while my memory might not be perfect, I find constant learning and applying new insights wherever I can to be incredibly valuable.
