Today we’d like to introduce you to Britney Peterson.
Hi Britney, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am honored to share my personal journey with you. When my children were young, I was felt drawn to finding alternative and natural ways to treat injury and illness in our home. The responsibility of motherhood and my love for these little humans created a consciousness around the safest way to keep them healthy and happy.
Ayurveda’s focus on individuality was a big draw… you simply can’t argue the fact that no two people are alike or that we each thrive in different ways and at different times. Year after year my love affair with Ayurveda has grown. What started as a go-to google search for ear infection, allergies, and respiratory illness remedies soon turned into a fascination with the energetics of foods, a deep curiosity about the elements and their role in our health, and the opportunity to discover spirituality in a way that I had never experienced or even imagined.
At one point several years ago, I made a conscious decision to start really fighting for my life. Instead of just dabbling here and there, I started to dig deep with a really sincere desire to develop a greater connection to my divine, to work through some trauma, and to create the kind of life I dreamed about. I didn’t want to be so comfortable in monotony and passion and desire were burning a hole inside of me. In time, the practices of self-care led to sincere and authentic self-love; a fascinating new discovery for me.
The more I seek guidance outside myself, the more Ayurveda shows up as a way to guide me to search within. I eventually discovered that the answers to my own health and happiness exist inside of me. I am proud of the work that has led to inner peace and tranquility, the ability to love and forgive people in my life, and the ability to feel physically at ease. I feel like I discovered an incredible secret and now I want to share it with the world.
My personal journey eventually led me to a recognition of my dharma and now I get to explore Ayurveda in all aspects of my life, including professionally.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say that the road has been particularly smooth but I can say with absolute confidence that I’ve been led, sometimes more gently than others, to this very place. They say that there are no accidents and when I look back on the events that led me to start Om Maitri Ayurveda, I can’t argue the fact that it was the hardest and roughest patches that guided me the most.
I used to jokingly tell people, “I am the busiest person I know.” I no longer feel the same sense of pride in how busy I used to be. I think I tried to wear my many responsibilities as a badge of honor. Now, I realize that I was doing a million things but I wasn’t doing them with much passion, I wasn’t enjoying myself the way I think I deserve, and I wasn’t still enough to hear all of the signs pointing to change.
A pretty rough accident that kept me off my feet and in a state of quiet stillness for several months is one example; the accident forced me to stop, to listen, to contemplate, and to dig pretty deep for the courage to take the next necessary steps to create a business that I believe can have an enormous impact on our health as individuals and as a community.
We’ve been impressed with Om Maitri Ayurveda, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The world’s oldest recorded approach to health, dating 500+ years in Indian history, and considered the “sister-science” to Yoga, Ayurveda means “knowledge of life.” This system of health focuses on the whole individual, seeing each person as the unique individual that they are and based on their unique elemental makeup. Ayurveda complements the Western symptom-based approach by treating illness from its root cause.
What’s more, Ayurveda gives us healthy guidelines for the prevention of pain, disease, and mental instability all based on a person’s individual make-up. No two people are alike and at Om Maitri Ayurveda, I take great pride in spending as much time with each individual as necessary to ensure a care plan that meets the individual needs and goals of each client.
I offer individual consultation and follow-up services. During an initial consultation, I gather a complete overview of the individual’s daily practices, symptoms, diet, schedule, and, most importantly, their goals. With that information, I develop a treatment plan that not only considers the client’s symptoms and their resources for implementing my recommendations, but that keeps a clear eye on the goals of the client.
People come to me to lose weight, to gain weight, to improve the quality of their sleep, to get rid of digestive and eliminative issues, develop or improve their spiritual practices, work through psychological issues such as anxiety, depression, anger, and so much more. Ayurveda uses a variety of practices for individuals to achieve their goals, including but not limited to essential oils, color, sound and gem therapy, diet, guidelines for eating, meditation, mantra, mudras, and other spiritual practices, and daily self-care practices.
I also offer a variety of bodywork services. These include body treatments that support the body’s response to stress, nourish the nervous system and the tissues of the body, build immunity, promote relaxation, and improve mental clarity.
I pride myself in providing clear and concise education about Ayurveda, its rich history, and how the elements impact the body so that my clients are able to take their personal care to the next level, without always relying on me, the practitioner, to guide them. Education is such a key component of success and I want all my clients to feel successful. My job is to guide, nurture and educate clients along their own path to peace, health, and a strong mind-body connection.
Consultation services are offered in person or virtually worldwide. Om Maitri Ayurveda body services are available in Salt Lake City, St. George, and Boulder, Utah.
What matters most to you? Why?
Maitri, which means benevolence or loving kindness to oneself, reminds us that the time we invest in caring for ourselves has the power to cause a great shift in our overall joy, peace, and well-being. Plus, it impacts our unified energy and the interconnectedness of all living things. Maitri is the foundation of my Ayurvedic practice.
As a community, we are currently dealing with a major health crisis and it’s never been so evident that we need strong immunity and the ability to relieve stress in healthy and sustainable ways. My practice is meant to help individuals in all aspects of their lives but the end goal is that my clients feel a great sense of love and respect for themselves.
