Community Highlights: Meet Chanda McConnell of Vidas Wax Works

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanda McConnell.

Hi Chanda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Vidas Wax Works started in 2019 when I set out to create handmade candle favors for my wedding. At the time, I struggled to make something I truly loved, and in the end, I wasn’t able to share them with my guests. But after the wedding, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had unfinished business—I wanted to get it right. So, I kept experimenting, refining my formulas, and learning everything I could about candle making. Eventually, I created something I was not only proud of but excited to share with others.

What started as a personal project turned into a passion for crafting high-quality, non-toxic candles. As the business grew, it became something even more special—it evolved into a mother-daughter venture built on a shared love for clean, sustainable home fragrance. Working together has allowed us to combine our strengths, creativity, and vision to create something truly meaningful. Over the years, we’ve sold at local markets, built an online presence, and connected with a growing community of people who care about non-toxic living. The journey hasn’t always been fast, but with dedication and a commitment to quality, we’ve grown steadily year after year, and we’re excited for what’s ahead!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any small business, the road hasn’t always been smooth. One of the biggest challenges has been navigating the unpredictability of selling at markets—each one is a gamble, and some have been far less successful than I’d hoped. Another major learning experience was when I decided to go all-in on our refillable candle concept, discontinuing our traditional jar candles. I believed in the idea, but I realized that most new-to-us customers weren’t ready for such a big shift. We had to take a step back and reintroduce what people knew and loved while still offering refills as an option. Despite the challenges, I’ve learned that every setback is an opportunity to grow, adjust, and keep pushing forward.

As you know, we’re big fans of Vidas Wax Works. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Vidas Wax Works is dedicated to creating high-quality, non-toxic candles with a focus on sustainability. We hand-pour every candle using our exclusive all-natural wax blend and phthalate-free fragrance oils, ensuring a clean burn without harmful toxins. One of the things that sets us apart is our commitment to sustainability—we offer a refillable candle system that allows customers to enjoy their favorite scents while reducing waste.

What began as a personal journey in candle making soon became something even more meaningful—a mother-daughter business built on shared creativity and passion. Working together has strengthened not only our business but also our bond, allowing us to blend our unique skills and perspectives to create something truly special. Every candle we pour is a reflection of our teamwork, dedication, and love for what we do.

We take pride in crafting unique, thoughtfully blended fragrances that go beyond the typical candle scents. Each scent tells a story, whether it’s inspired by a special memory, a feeling, or a place. Our goal is to create candles that bring comfort, nostalgia, and elevate everyday moments.

What we’re most proud of is the trust we’ve built with our community. Every candle we make is a reflection of our passion for clean living, quality craftsmanship, and creating products that people can feel good about using in their homes. We want readers to know that when they choose Vidas Wax Works, they’re not just buying a candle—they’re supporting a small business that values integrity, sustainability, and the little moments that make life special.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk is an inevitable part of running a business, and while I wouldn’t consider myself a reckless risk-taker, I do believe that growth often requires stepping outside of my comfort zone. One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was shifting my business model to focus solely on refillable candles. At the time, I believed it was the right move for sustainability and long-term success. However, I realized that many customers weren’t ready for such a big change, and we had to pivot back to offering traditional jar candles alongside our refills. It was a humbling but valuable lesson—sometimes, taking a risk means being willing to adapt when things don’t go as planned.

Ultimately, I see risk as necessary for innovation and growth. Not every decision will be a perfect success, but I’d rather take calculated risks and learn from them than stay stagnant. The key is being willing to pivot, learn, and keep moving forward.
