Community Highlights: Meet Eli Gutierrez of Overthinker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eli Gutierrez.

Hi Eli, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my business in 2020 because like everyone I was stuck inside because of the pandemic! Little did I know that my business would grow so much. I started off selling clay earrings but I now sell handmade beaded necklaces and a variety of other jewelry items. I call my business Overthinker because I wanted to create a brand that was relatable to others and myself.

Making jewelry is an escape for me, it helps me turn off my brain and stop overthinking. My goal is to create jewelry that helps people express themselves, find ways to be eco-friendly, and make high-quality items that will last forever.

I love adding meaning to the jewelry I make. I use spiral and star charms often and here’s why! The spiral symbolizes a person’s winding journey inward because it is when we turn inward that we truly learn to know and love ourselves for the people we are. The star symbolizes how there are so many possibilities out there and to never limit ourselves.

I’m so grateful for how much I’ve grown since 2020. I’ve shipped my jewelry to every state in the U.S. and recently, I reached 10k followers on Instagram. My message to everyone reading this is to remember, you don’t overthink they’re just mean. Please remember to be your authentic self!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. I am a teenager and I started my business when I was 13 (I am now 16).

This has caused so many challenges. Figuring out taxes is no easy feat. I’ve struggled the most with pricing items, keeping up with demand, tracking finances, And being consistent.

We’ve been impressed with Overthinker, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I specialize in beaded necklaces but I also sell earrings, bracelets, keychains, rings, and hair clips. I’m known for my grunge/alternative-style jewelry. I use lots of dark green, black, white, and grey, spirals, stars, teeth, and heart charms and beads! I get my inspiration from 2000’s retro/goth/emo/grunge aesthetics.

My brand is unique because everything is handmade and designed by me! In most designs, there is only one made.

I’m very proud that I was able to find my niche, when I first started I jumped back and forth between business names and different types of jewelry. I’m happy to have created a unique brand that also follows my values.

We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I think success is a state of mind. It all comes down to being mindful and not labeling things as successes or failures but rather as a learning experiences. For me, a successful life would be living in the moment and experiencing everything as it comes.
