Today we’d like to introduce you to Emilie Davis.
Hi Emilie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into holistic nutrition started with my own health challenges. Years ago, I struggled with chronic Epstein-Barr virus and began exploring functional and holistic medicine when conventional approaches weren’t giving me the answers I was looking for. During that process, I became fascinated by the role nutrition plays in healing and recovery. I saw firsthand that what we eat can profoundly influence how our bodies function—yet nutrition is often overlooked or underutilized in healthcare.
That realization led me to pursue formal training in nutrition and eventually start my practice, Whole Essentials Nutrition. Early in my career, I noticed that many of the symptoms people struggle with—digestive issues, skin problems, fatigue, brain fog, autoimmune conditions, and even mood changes—often trace back to the health of the gut. Yet gut health is still widely misunderstood and frequently left unaddressed in traditional care.
Over time, I built my practice around helping people uncover and address those root causes. Today I specialize in gut health using a combination of functional testing, nutrition coaching, and personalized programs like my Gut Restore Program to help clients rebalance their microbiome and restore digestive health.
More recently, my personal health journey has come full circle in a new way. In 2023, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. After two years and nine different medications that haven’t provided the relief we hoped for, I’ve once again found myself turning back to nutrition as part of my healing process. It’s been a humbling reminder that when we’re dealing with autoimmune disease or other chronic conditions, sometimes we have to dig even deeper.
As an Autoimmune Paleo (AIP) Certified Coach, I’m now putting myself through the same process I guide many clients through—using the AIP diet and therapeutic fasting to reduce inflammation and support my body in ways medication alone hasn’t been able to. It’s an ongoing journey, but it continues to reinforce the same belief that led me into this field in the first place: nutrition is one of the most powerful tools we have to support healing.
Along the way, I’ve also expanded into teaching college nutrition courses, collaborating with other healthcare practitioners, and sharing practical nutrition strategies through local media and community education. It’s been incredibly rewarding to watch the practice grow and to become a trusted resource for people who feel like they’ve tried everything but still aren’t getting answers. My goal has always been simple: help people understand their bodies better and use nutrition as a powerful tool for healing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most entrepreneurial journeys, it hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Building Whole Essentials Nutrition required a lot of personal growth alongside professional growth. Early on, one of my biggest challenges was finding my voice and clarity in what I wanted to be known for. Nutrition is a broad field, and it took time to recognize that gut health was where I could make the greatest impact and where my passion truly lived.
Another challenge was simply wearing all the hats that come with being a small business owner. In the beginning, I was not only the practitioner but also the marketer, website designer, social media manager, scheduler, and bookkeeper. It can be overwhelming trying to build something meaningful while managing all the behind-the-scenes pieces that people don’t always see.
More recently, I’ve faced challenges on a personal health level as well. Being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2023 has been its own journey of patience and resilience. After trying multiple medications without the results we hoped for, it’s reminded me how complex chronic illness can be and how important it is to keep exploring different paths to healing. It’s also deepened my empathy for my clients, many of whom come to me after trying many things without success.
Through all of these experiences, I’ve learned that growth—both in business and in health—is rarely linear. The challenges have pushed me to refine my work, stay curious, and continue learning. If anything, those moments have strengthened my commitment to helping people find answers and feel empowered in their health journey.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Whole Essentials Nutrition is a holistic nutrition practice that specializes in gut health. I work with individuals who are struggling with chronic digestive issues, food sensitivities, fatigue, skin concerns, autoimmune conditions, and other symptoms that often trace back to imbalances in the gut.
What I’m most known for is helping people uncover the root causes behind their symptoms rather than simply managing them. Many of my clients come to me after years of being told their labs look “normal” but they still don’t feel well. Using functional tools like comprehensive stool testing, along with personalized nutrition and lifestyle strategies, I help clients better understand what’s actually happening in their bodies and create a clear path forward.
My signature offering is the Gut Restore Program, where we take a structured approach to rebuilding gut health over time. I combine functional testing, nutrition therapy, and ongoing coaching to help clients rebalance their microbiome, repair their gut lining, and restore digestion in a sustainable way.
What sets my work apart is that it’s highly personalized and rooted in education. I want clients to truly understand their bodies, not just follow a list of instructions. When people understand the “why” behind what they’re doing, they’re much more empowered to create lasting change.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is building a practice that people trust. My goal has always been to create a space where clients feel heard, supported, and guided through complex health issues in a practical, approachable way. At the end of the day, I want people to know that healing is possible—and that nutrition can be one of the most powerful tools we have to support long-term health.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Absolutely. No one builds something like this alone, and I’ve been fortunate to have several people and communities play important roles along the way.
Early in my journey, a few local naturopathic doctors were incredibly influential. They helped me personally when I was navigating my own health challenges and introduced me to the world of holistic and functional medicine. Their approach to looking deeper for root causes and using nutrition as part of treatment really changed how I understood health. They also encouraged me to pursue formal training in nutrition, which ultimately led me to the work I’m doing today.
More recently, my local BNI chapter has played a big role in the growth of my business. Being surrounded by other entrepreneurs and professionals has helped me learn how to truly run a business—not just practice my profession. Members in my chapter have supported me through business coaching, financial guidance, tax preparation, and simply being a trusted sounding board as I’ve grown Whole Essentials Nutrition. It’s been an incredibly supportive community that celebrates each other’s wins and helps navigate challenges together.
And of course, my clients deserve a huge amount of credit as well. Many of them come to me after long and frustrating health journeys, and their willingness to trust the process and do the work it takes to heal is incredibly inspiring. Watching their progress and seeing them regain their health is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
