Community Highlights: Meet Gerardo Villena of Villena Insurance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerardo Villena

Hi Gerardo, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Gerardo Villena is a Venezuelan immigrant who graduated as a lawyer in 2016, earning the National Entrepreneurship Award from Banco BOD that same year. After practicing law for two years and facing the increasing challenges in his home country, he emigrated in 2019 in search of new opportunities.

Upon arriving in the United States, Gerardo faced the global uncertainty brought on by the pandemic. Seizing the moment, when all insurance agents were on the same level due to the lockdowns, he began his career in insurance. He focused on helping and guiding the migrant community, allowing him to grow rapidly. He started his training with Farmers under a specialized program and, by 2022, opened his own office, becoming one of the first migrants in Farmers to run an office specifically oriented toward serving the migrant population.

Today, Gerardo Villena works as an insurance agent and Realtor, having issued over 2,000 insurance policies throughout his career. His office serves clients in more than three languages and has proudly supported and insured over 10 families with deaf-mute members. Gerardo aims to double the size of this community by September 2025. He is currently expanding his team and preparing to launch his second company, V2 Consultores, along with a mobile app he has developed over the past two years with his own funding. His entrepreneurial spirit continues to drive his mission to serve the migrant community.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a new career during the COVID-19 lockdown was far from an easy ride; it brought challenges in ways I had never imagined. The language barrier, cultural differences, and the process of helping many immigrant families who were facing both financial risks and job losses created constant pressure. On top of that, there was the added difficulty of adjusting to Utah’s climate. Many of my clients were experiencing winter for the first time, which introduced new risks they had never faced before.

Opening an office for the first time as an immigrant was by far the most difficult and stressful process I’ve ever gone through—much more demanding than the process of migrating itself. From bank loan applications being denied because I wasn’t a citizen to not being taken seriously because of my age or immigrant status, the hurdles were many. I remember one time receiving an email saying that I had achieved the company’s National Toppers Club goal in just six months instead of the typical year. I didn’t even know what the prize was or how I had qualified because no one had told me about it. When I asked why, they admitted they didn’t inform me of competitions or rewards because they didn’t believe I would achieve them.

Moreover, the experience of securing approval for an office space from a landlord was incredibly slow and stressful. The negotiations, excessive demands for deposits, and the challenging paperwork were so overwhelming that I became determined to help others avoid the same struggle. That’s why, in 2023, I worked to obtain my Realtor license, with the goal of offering my community a financial planning approach that starts from the very first stage of migration and continues through to their entrepreneurial aspirations. It brings me immense joy when a client, whom I first met as a new arrival, tells me they are ready to start a business or that they’ve quit their job to fully dedicate themselves to a part-time project that’s now flourishing.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is starting every day with one simple ritual: a warm cup of coffee made by me. No matter how I feel or what my schedule holds, that small moment grounds me and gives me a sense of calm before the day takes off. In my line of work, an accident call or urgent situation can come at any moment, so having that brief moment of simplicity makes all the difference. It’s a reminder that even in the chaos, there’s space for balance. Solving problems and helping others navigate tough situations brings fulfillment, both personally and professionally.
