Today we’d like to introduce you to Healing Seeds Farm. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Healing Seeds was born in the small town of Peoa in the Wasatch Back of Utah.
Through the course of the Covid pandemic, Naturopathic doctor Babbie Lester Stern saw an increasingly fractured supply of the herbal medicines and healthy food she recommended to her patients. She decided to take action in her backyard and began developing an organic food and herbal farm on her property. After two years of constructing, experimenting, and revising, Babbie’s dream to cultivate consciousness with healing seeds has grown into a dedicated team, mission, and vision.
Today, Healing Seeds is a social enterprise strategy determined to re-localize well-being with both human and ecological residents of the Wasatch Back. It is designed to be one solution to the multiple, interconnected planetary crises that humanity faces. Put simply, the purpose of Healing Seeds is to cultivate holism – socially, economically, ecologically, and spiritually.
We believe we can contribute to the regenerative story of our time by remembering our connections. Re-investing in the connections that kept us alive for millennia, in food, medicine, spirit, and community, we believe will give us renewed life today and for future generations.
Inspired by research that informed the Blue Zones, we are developing an innovative model that weaves together core, evidence-based wellness elements that support humans’ essential needs to live healthy and meaningful lives. Healing Seeds aggregates these core elements human communities need to become well:
o A biodynamic farm that makes healthy food accessible;
o Botanical medicines and well-care services;
o Programming to re-connect to Self, Earth, and one another;
o Shared village of neighbors mutually dedicated to relocalizing holistic wellbeing.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Trying to reimagine a viable model for farming and connectivity has been challenging. In addition to riding the waves of the pandemic and its psychosocial impacts, we’ve tried many iterations of business models, hired many consultants, and tried different revenue avenues to make this accessible and viable.
It’s been hard on the team, on the pocketbook, on team morale, and the vision. We feel immensely grateful for our team, their vision, resilience, and passion to help make the world a better place.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Healing Seeds Farm?
Rooted in Utah’s Wasatch Back, Healing Seeds is working with local communities to craft a regenerative story about us and our well-being.
We believe we can remember diverse ways of caring about the world, the earth, and all its inhabitants. We are working to cultivate well-being through resilient food, healthy bodies, connected spirits, & purposeful togetherness.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Dr. Babbie knew by the time she was 4 that she wanted to be a doctor.
She loved being in Nature, loved animals, and spending time in the woods and by the rivers. She was curious, bright, courageous, and compassionate, and knew she wanted to help make the world a better place.
