Community Highlights: Meet Jackie Hendrickson of Enduura Nutrition

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Hendrickson.

Hi Jackie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Jackie Hendrickson. I own my business, Enduura Nutrition as a registered dietitian and running coach. My main focus is to help endurance athletes learn to fuel and train properly for peak performance while also improving their relationship with food & their body.

Sports have always been a part of my life. When I was in 5th grade, I joined the swim team and swam competitively through my freshman year of high school. At that point, I decided to switch my focus to track and cross country where I felt I had more natural talent. Through these sports, I learned how to set goals and work hard to achieve them. I began to have an interest in nutrition and sought to fuel my body as perfectly as possible so that I could reach my potential as an athlete.

It seemed like a natural choice for me to study nutrition when I started college at Utah State University. To be honest, I thought I already knew most of what I would learn in my university studies. I was already rigid with the quality of food that I put into my body and assumed I would just learn more about what additional foods I should exclude. I believed that the smaller my body was, the better I was going to perform, and put a lot of time and effort into restricting my diet to “just the essentials.” I knew I needed to give my body some fuel, but was more worried about not giving it too much than I ought to have been.

My running performance was inconsistent as a result. It wasn’t until my junior and senior years of college when I was actually in the Dietetics program that I realized my pre-conceived notions of ideal nutrition were incorrect.

Instead of becoming more restrictive, I found myself becoming less restrictive as I understood (without fear) how my body recognized food and utilized the nutrients in the food. I became more neutral towards my body size, understanding that in order for it to function properly, I had to provide it with adequate volumes of food to support my high level of physical activity. What my body was capable of doing was more important than what it looked like.

With time, my body was able to regulate and get to a healthy place where high performance could be a priority. I was no longer competing collegiately, but found a high level of success in road and trail running, posting times of 2:42 for the marathon and 1:14 for the half marathon. I couldn’t believe how much better I felt with this less restrictive approach and wanted to share what I had learned with my fellow runners who may be struggling with the same things I did for so many years.

It has been a privilege to work with so many stellar individuals over the last 5 years and see the progress they have been able to make mentally and physically as I have worked with them to focus on what matters most in terms of nutrition and training so that they too can reach their own athletic potential.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Changing deeply held beliefs and mindsets is never an easy task and takes a lot of patience. Looking back, I can see that I took things step by step when changing my own beliefs and behaviors, only doing what felt doable in the moment. I try to apply those same principles to my clients and athletes. The goal is to progress, rather than to achieve perfection. As long as we are headed in the right direction, it’s good enough.

We’ve been impressed with Enduura Nutrition, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Enduura Nutrition is a virtual business where clients can work with me 1:1 to improve their nutrition and running performance.

In terms of nutrition, I most typically work with endurance athletes who struggle with disordered eating, a diagnosed eating disorder, or who just want to optimize their nutrition for athletic performance.

My personal background in sports and nutrition uniquely qualifies me to understand the mindset these athletes have. As a result I can more effectively work with them to improve their health and eating patterns while helping them empowered to maintain their athletic goals as a top priority.

I also provide personalized training plans to help runners achieve their goals in road and trail races of all distances. I find so much joy seeing my athletes reach the goals they set for themselves and find the success they are looking for.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I am grateful for the clients and athletes who have trusted me thus far. This business wouldn’t be here without them. I am also grateful for my husband who works with me to juggle kids and work between the two of us. It’s a team effort.
