Community Highlights: Meet Jason Singer of Honigman Design Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Singer

Hi Jason , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My husband, Scott, and I moved to Salt Lake from Detroit 6 years ago. Growing up in Colorado, I missed living in the mountains. SLC is such an amazing city. I think it’s what people expect Denver to be like. We moved from the Midwest and never looked back.

We started our design firm in 2020. We wanted to bring contemporary design to the valley. Our philosophy is simple- boldly modern design that exudes warmth. We construct stunning spaces that are timeless, contemporary, and most importantly, homey. Modern shouldn’t be intimidating; it should be inviting. So often contemporary design invokes thoughts of sterility, we wanted to challenge that notion.

Working with my husband has been such a fun experience. His strengths are in layout and mathematics while I like to focus on the details. During the pandemic, we bought a bungalow in Sugarhouse and completely took it down to the studs. It was such an incredible opportunity designing our dream home from scratch.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Moving across the country to a new city and not knowing anyone at first definitely proved making friends difficult at first. But over time, we slowly met people and grew a close, fun network here. From a work standpoint, building quality-or lack there of- is a huge hurdle here. Utah has so little in way of building codes and standards, a bored guy can watch a Youtube video and just call themselves a master cabinet maker. Fortunately, we have a solid rolodex of great trades people to work with to make our visions become reality.

Another challenge is what I call the HGTV effect- people really don’t understand that Interior Designers are meant to finish spaces. If you watch these TV shows, people have the expectation that as an Interior Designer you understand electrical, plumbing, architecture, and can completely gut a house just walking into it. People often don’t realize that there is a whole crew of trades people behind the scenes telling designers what can and cannot be done.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Waking up and seeing the mountains every day adds so much quality to our day. We never take it for granted. SLC is the perfect sized city for us- small enough to get around everywhere in 15 minutes, but large enough to feel like we live in a metropolitan area. Construction and air quality are my biggest complaints.
