Today we’d like to introduce you to Joesephine Lawrence.
Hi Joesephine, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been interested in the esoteric since I was a kid. I remember collecting medicinal yarrow on hikes with my mom to later hang dry on a clothesline in my room. I would take late-night walks in the mountain town I grew up in. Wrapped in a blanket, staring at the full moon above me, feeling its draw. As an adult, I worked at cool jobs like a bookstore, a Japanese spa, and an acupuncture clinic. I cultivated groups of friends who were into philosophy, herbology, arts, psychedelics, health, and humanitarianism. I became a birth doula and thought I had found my calling until the long and unpredictable hours caught up with me.
In 2014, I was in a car accident that gave me PTSD. Not long after, I had a dream that I was being hypnotized. I had never been to a hypnotist before, so in my dream, they used the common troupe of the golden pocket watch. It felt like the space between life and death; it was a calming, warm, dark, peaceful space. The next day, my friend came over to visit and said she had tried something unusual: she had gone to a hypnotherapist! She had his card with her, and I took it as an unquestionable sign that I needed to go. I booked an appointment with Andrew Green, and that first session changed my life. On the bus ride home after the session I thought, “That was so cool. I want to do that!”
Because of that one session, I have a different view of how the accident affected me. I now feel like if I hadn’t been in that car accident, I wouldn’t have found my calling as a hypnotherapist.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest challenge is being a woman solopreneur. Wearing all the hats of a fully operating business in addition to being a hypnotherapist. Luckily, my previous jobs have cumulatively taught me how to do a lot of back-end business work like bookkeeping and website management.
They don’t teach you how to open and run a small business in school, and I think they should! Thankfully there are a lot of resources and communities like the Women’s Business Center of Utah out there to help small business owners figure things out.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Hypnoclarity provides hypnotherapy to the Salt Lake Valley and beyond (yes, hypnotherapy can be done over Zoom). Hypnosis is often portrayed in movies and the media incorrectly. I enjoy dispelling the myths of hypnosis. What hypnosis isn’t: mind control, loss of consciousness or memory, loss of self-control. It is a focused state of attention that is a learning state of the subconscious.
We go into hypnosis naturally every day: before sleep, when watching a movie, scrolling social media, reading a book, sometimes when driving, or simply daydreaming. When you’re under hypnosis, you have full autonomy, thoughts, personal exploration, and epiphanies. It is a self-driven therapy that is relaxing for the mind and body. The hypnotherapist is simply the guide. Kind of like psychedelic (mind-manifesting) therapy!
I specialize in curated care during sessions with my clients with hypnotherapy and NLP (neuro-linguistic programming). I am probably most known for HypnoReiki sessions that include Reiki Drumming. In addition to formal Hypnotherapy sessions, I also offer Cord Release (codependency release), Sigil Imagery Hypnosis, HypnoPsychedelics, and Past Life Regression/Future Life Progression.
Hypnotherapy can help across the board in many ways: from habit change to chronic pain. Hypnotherapy can support you to be subconsciously open to your own desired suggestions, perceptions, and behaviors across the board. To name a few: increase confidence, find inner peace, uncover purpose, release guilt and shame, recover from fears and phobias, manage challenges, self-care and self-love, live healthier, and deal with physical health issues.*
*Physical and mental health issues may need a referral from a doctor or therapist.
What I’m most proud of brand-wise is how much word-of-mouth I get. Hypnotherapy really helps people, and they talk about it within their community. I’m happy that people are getting such great results, and enough to refer people back to me. It keeps it in the community, and when people hear about Hypnoclarity from a friend, we already have some rapport from the start.
Hypnosis has historically gotten a bad rap (though it’s been used for thousands of years in different cultures), and every time someone opens their mind to it, we get a little closer to getting a powerfully healing modality back into the public eye.
Any big plans?
My plans for the future of Hypnoclarity are to keep working with clients and building a community with and for them.
By building a community, I mean having resources and connections to other local people and groups to create a full-spectrum web of support. This includes anything from different types of therapists to alternative medical practices like acupuncture and naturopathy, to local health food stores and herbal apothecaries.
A part of my mission both current and future is to continue to dispel the myths of hypnosis. I want to teach empowering techniques people can use on their own, like self-hypnosis and NLP techniques. Imagine someone sitting at work and feeling a headache coming on. They know to check their basic needs (hydration, stress levels, etc.), and they do a simple NLP technique and their headache dissipates.
